At the center of this "straight-to-the-gut" (Publishers Weekly) novel is strong, lovely Augusta--Gus--wife and mother of three children, who is dying of cancer. In her last weeks she sits for a sculptor capturing her spirit in bronze--a brave final gesture for her young family. "Above all, this poetic story is about the small, strange, and important ways people have of expressing love" (Christian Science Monitor).
A poignant mediation on dying. A young woman, a wife, mother, sister, and friend asks to die at home among her loved ones. This is the story that the last month in her life and how each of her loved ones is affected. It's beautifully written and very realistic.
This book was a real find, and I highly recommend it. Gus, wife and mother, is dying and wants to leave something of importance to those she loves. That sentence is so simple in describing the heart wrenching emotions the characters bring to the reader. She has a bronze statue made of herself, and while the bronze is being made, the reader learns things about love that transcend death.
