Given the name Papa Haydn by his contemporaries, because they loved working with and learning from him, Franz Josef Haydn is called the Father of the Symphony because of his wonderful and often playful contributions to this important form. The more than 1 symphonies he composed include The Surprise, The Farewell, The Clock and The Drumroll.
This is a book for children about the important composer Joseph Haydn. The information is presented in a simple, straightforward way, with difficult words in bold (a glossary of these words appears in the back of the book). The illustrations are appropriate and quite lovely. However, this book contains at least one GLARING error: it was not a mass named 'Creation' that was performed toward the end of the composer's life; it was his oratorio the same name. Perhaps the author did not want to introduce -- and attempt to describe -- the term 'oratorio.' Nevertheless, this grievous misrepresentation prevents a solid recommendation.
