A Brother's Obsession
Evan Brown is a disturbed man. For over a decade, the tragic death of his beloved sister has tormented him. His inability to save her has filled him with grief and guilt and is slowly driving him insane. After a bizarre murder spree begins in Tucson, detectives Dan Felty and MacKenzie Bell begin investigating the case. They scramble to understand the killer's motives and keep him from killing again. His victims appear to be chosen randomly, and the body count is rising rapidly. As the detectives get closer to the killer, he lashes out, leaving one of them fighting for his life. But will a figure from the murderer's past be the key to tracking him down... and can he be stopped?

This was a well written story that delves into the mind of a serial killer and the detectives that hunt him down. The author does a great job of unfolding the tale and leading the reader through the technical aspects on both sides of the crime scenes. Interspersed within a fast paced crime story, there were a lot of "Really? I didn't know that!" moments to give the reader "Easter eggs" into crime lab work and the unraveling of the hows and whys of the murders.
While the book deals with death and crime, the author also handles the writing with an admirable amount of tact. The brutality of murder is the theme, but the writer is able to display it in his words without delving into grotesque description that would be a sharp departure from his other works (Christopher Coates fans: this one is a little darker than his other writings, but I'd rate it as a PG13).

Very well written, I was hooked on the first page to the last. The twists and turns were like "wow, that's good". Some novels just go on and on describing a scene, Christopher does a great job with less words and still gets the picture across to you.

A good read! This story kept me engaged throughout. It had multiple twists and kept me guessing. I met Chris in Cadillac Michigan at a book fair and bought this book, so glad I did! I will be looking for more titles from this author.

Kind of a different ending, but something to think about. What happened to a person when they were young and they go through something that traumatize them.
