À la fin du Sacrifice, Gemme, la fille du Roi des Fey, Rugar, épouse le prince insulaire Nicolas afin d'allier les deux peuples dans un semblant de paix et d'entente. Car les Fey n'ont toujours pas réussi à trouver un antidote à l'arme fatale des Insulaires, l'eau bénite.
Gemme et Nicolas ont désormais un fils. Ce dernier est censé détenir de grands pouvoirs magiques, mais Rugar l'a fait kidnapper et remplacer par un golem, petite créature sans âme. Il pousse plus loin encore ses machinations en assassinant le roi Alexandre, père de Nicolas. Immédiatement, Gemme est mise en cause par Matthias, le nouveau Rocaan, chef des religieux. Celui-ci refuse également l'alliance entre Fey et Insulaires et ne peut supporter l'idée de voir l'héritier de Gemme et de Nicolas prendre à terme le pouvoir. Mais Gemme est à nouveau enceinte, d'une fille cette fois, douée des pouvoirs des Métamorphes.
