While it isn't something you would usually think or say about an art book, John Rheaume is a great writer and teacher. One of the strengths of this book is how honest and helpful he is to aspiring artists. There are some really nice pieces of advice and perspective on art that he sprinkles throughout this book and that certainly makes this book stand out from others on the market.

As wonderful as this is, How to Draw Wizards is a drawing book and teaching how to draw is just as important. This book has an impressive range of subjects from wizards of different kinds, to items a wizard might have, and wizard towers and a workshop. Many of these have a step by step guide too which is nice to see. The images are also nice and large so you can see the detail. I am a "traditional" artist and don't use Photoshop at all and most of the drawings are enhanced through Photoshop and wouldn't look great if done with colored pencils for example. This was a little disappointing, but it is pretty common in drawing books. If there is one criticism I could level against the book, it is that too many of the drawings are done in black and dark blues. These make them look too similar in my opinion.

One thing this book definitively provides is inspiration. Rheaume gives a couple of awesome ideas that could inspire you to draw a lot. I don't want to spoil what they are, but this book gave me an idea for a series of drawings that I hope to work on in the the near future. While there isn't a lot of competition for books on how to draw Wizards, this is certainly a really strong one and one I'm glad I own.
