With a 1981 copyright date, the book is obviously outdated in some respects (I got a kick out of it describing "drafting machines"). However, while the methods of drafting have changed from hand-drawn maps to the bloated AutoCAD software that's around today, a lot of the principles, styles, symbols, and linetypes remain the same. The book is also helpful in learning the basics for different types of maps, easements and Title documents that you run into on ALTA surveys, and equipment used for drawing maps before computers and CADD came around.

It will also help you answer a few questions for the NSPS CST tests if you are going down that route.
