A pocket-sized birder guide for casual birders. It's definitely a good one to add to your collection. I found this at the library, but will try to find a good used copy for my personal library.
Easily tucked into a pocket or purse, this light-weight guide is perfect for the traveler or everyday bird appreciator who wants the basics at hand—not a textbook. And whereas many guidebook illustrations tend to be either overly artistic or too anatomical, Todd Telander’s illustrations strike the perfect balance. The birds’ poses and colors all appear true, as if they were painted outdoors in natural light, rather than under a studio lamp.
With this trusty guide, I identified over 40 birds over the course of two daytrips around the San Francisco Bay area with my family. As these trips were not intended as birding outings, most of my bird sightings came from the car window or medium-paced strolls through bird-friendly town squares. The book made it easy to confirm my initial ID, or to narrow down a few possibilities, based on the location, habitat, behavior and observed attributes of a bird.
