It's a guide book. Mine is the first edition. At close to 500 pages it's about as comprehensive as one could ask for, though the first edition was written before bouldering really took off and so a separate guide for that should be consulted.

Would like better maps or an overview map but this was a crucial piece for my climbing trip

The go-to guide for Joshua Tree, though I suggest the updated versions for better directions and bouldering routes.
