Second World
Clare, the youngest in her dysfunctional family, cannot connect with her explosive father, her emotionally stunted mother, or her bossy big sister. She separates herself from them and discovers that she is a supernatural link. Along with her grandfather’s ghost and Horus, the talking dog, she connects to the spirit realm, filled with supernatural creatures both good and grim, that lies within her world. Relying on the support of friends new and old, Clare journeys toward understanding the unnatural rules that govern both worlds and her destiny. When the spirit world and everyday life finally collide, young Clare must decide for herself what is real.

How often do we actually know what is around us? In her book, “Second World”, R.M. Wagoner takes us on a journey where not only does the protagonist Claire have the gift of being able to see the spirit world around us, but also the gift of being able to directly interact therein. A double-edged sword, no doubt, but one we all frequently, if we are honest, would like to be able to do on a more direct basis than is frequently allowed.
As I read this book, several thoughts came forth. This book was written in a manner that is easy to follow. Frequently, other authors have attempted to address the spirit world, and lost their audience due to delivery. Not so with this particular story. Ms. Wagoner has chosen a simple, plain language method to address the feelings of a young girl who has not only lost loved ones, but is actively involved in the spiritual world of those who are about to enter it. For example, she can talk with a grandparent that has moved on; the description of his personal version of limbo (that place where the spirit just can't move on until lessons learned or, if you will, a bus station where you don't know when your bus will arrive to take you on) is my version of true sadness.
Second thought: I do not think like many younger people think, nor do I express myself in adequate manner. Make no mistake; this is not an “in your face” book on God and life… nor is it an irresponsible tome determined to make a point with no discussion. R.M. takes you on a journey of realization where not only are there spirits who are determined to assist the dark side in sinister plans, but also an overwhelming spirit of good, overcoming this evil, in the form of a kindly man called “Change”, aka God in a form we can understand, and those who assist the Holy Spirit, representing Angels assisting God’s works. I know at a deeper plane, where I am in my life, I probably would lose younger audiences if I tried to write a book like this. R.M. makes the journey interesting; I wanted to keep reading once I started, and once I started to return to a more youthful thought process, the story was even easier.
I particularly was fascinated by the development of one character, that of Horus. A demon, for lack of better words, in the form of a dog, this character comes across first as ambivalent and friendly, then later more malevolent. The really interesting part is how the focus of the story, Claire, handles this little bit of earthly disservice. Initially on amicable terms, Claire learns of his real purpose later in the story, and, with Change’s assistance, puts him in his place, even while the king of the earth looks on. The message: Even a simple person has the ability to handle evil in God’s service. It’s an important message... How often do we deal with such demons in our life, and do we handle them as well?
The book is aimed at a young audience, probably in the mid-teens; as such, an older person like me had a little difficulty following some conversation and concepts, but I caught up once I allowed myself to delve in to the story. Communication is always the broken tooth in the machine; in this book, R.M. has successfully written a story whereby a person can see (and possibly relate to) another opportunity for God to perform the works so important to our spiritual lives. I rate this book highly for passing on a positive message in a way I have not experienced before; a rousing well done RM!

As I started SECOND WORLD by RM WAGONER, I didn’t know what to expect. In the beginning I wasn’t sure where the story was going, but it was so well written and intrigued me enough to keep me turning the pages. When I realized what direction it was headed, I was hooked.
Clare’s family is anything but normal. Her father is temperamental, her mother emotionless, and her older sister bossy. Young Clare escapes her dysfunctional family while encountering supernatural forces, and embarks on a journey that will forever change her destiny.
For a book with only 170 pages, it packs a powerful punch. It’s beautifully crafted and filled with wisdom. Two books came to mind while reading SECOND WORLD, The Shack, by William P Young, and Hind Feet on High Places, by Hannah Hurnard.
It takes more than just good writing to produce a great book. It takes a well carried out plot, three-dimensional, fully developed characters, writing that is paced well, words that flow naturally, believable action, consequences, and dialogue that work. One that makes you forget you’re reading a story, so emerged in the pages you’ll be. SECOND WORLD was all of that and so much more.
I was speechless as the story neared the end. I was jolted into tears and left deep in thought, needing moments to absorb the story that unfolded in the course of only a few short days. The insight to good and evil that is in this world, along with God’s goodness and grace is astounding. The author pulled off faith woven in such a natural way you don’t feel preached too.
SECOND WORLD would make a wonderful addition to the classics in most schools now days as part of their curriculum. What a refreshing read for young adults as well as any age. I fear my words will fail do this book justice. If this is MS WAGONER’S first published book, I can’t wait to see what she has in store for the future.

Clare is a young girl who has a special gift. She is able to see and communicate with beings in the Second World, also known as the spirit world. When death and heartache surround her, she learns, with the help of her new friend Mae, that the forces of good and evil in the spirit world are able to affect the real world.
Second World is an intriguing story that conveys the Christian beliefs that, "Jesus always wins," and "With God nothing is impossible." These themes are woven thoughout the book. Many of the characters are biblical in nature. For example, the High Prince in the story is Jesus, and the Ruler of the Land is Satan. There are many fascinating elements of the spirit world incorporated into the story, including the characters' ablility to speak in tongues.
Author, R M Wagoner, has artfully crafted a captivating story of the supernatural, which ultimately is a story of salvation. Christian readers, age ten and older, who enjoy reading about the supernatural, will enjoy this book.
