In this delightful, turn-of-the-century guide, farmer Joseph Harris dispenses practical, time-honored teachings on the hows and wherefores of pig rearing.
Ah I wish I could have seen the piggeries described in this book. A book about real animal husbandry - not just pig farming. Raising pigs in the late 1800s is described in detail by this author who was known as the authority on the subject. "Rough treatment and crowded sties have no place in the keeping of pigs..... Fire any hired man who'd hit a pig... let no harsh words be spoken." Studies on feeding, types of nutrition, and foods to grow for your pigs. Not only a how-to, but also rich in history and some humor. I love the part about farmers having competitions about who could grow the fattest pig by fall (the trick? - read the book).
