A quick and meticulous study and translation of the Mingbao ji, an early Tang collection of miracle tales. There are four chapters to the study: one on genre, one on the author, one on the editions, and one on Chinese-Buddhist cosmology. A lovely source for thinking through Chinese religion "in between" the canonical scriptures/classical histories on the one hand and the Dunhuang manuscripts on the other.
Of course the underworld would be structured like a bureaucracy!!
