I didn't finish this completely either but the amount of suffering I had to experience because of this book was insane. The least this book can do is count towards my reading goal.
Preface: This was a textbook for a 300 level grammar course.
Tough to rate. The content is organized excellently. Exercises and examples are great. Really has the makings of a favorite textbook, but the thing is impossible to read. I swear it's like reading a rocket science manual or something, just constant constant technical jargon piled on top of itself to the point where you read a sentence 5 times and still have no idea what it's saying. Like, now having read the whole thing and gotten an A in the course, returning to previous chapters it makes sense because I've become familiar with all the terms, but reading through it the first time is impossible because he teaches you 10 different terms and then writes sentences with all 10 terms in them. You've just learned them but aren't familiar with them so those sentences are just confusing as hell. Got to the point where I would only read the chapter *after* our class on it not before, which is just stupidly the opposite of how it's supposed to work but whatever.
Okay grammar geeks heads up. This book is easy to read and follow. It offers exercises for each section and opportunity to stretch your skills and your abilities. This book will help you refine your knowledge on grammar, parts of speech and good writing. I had to buy it for a college class and I'm glad I spent the money. Worth every penny and is on my reference shelf in easy reach.
