Your Body, Your Choice is the first book addressed to the lay-person on the revolutionary scientific advancements currently challenging the whole practice of one of medicine's oldest therapies – blood transfusion. The long and widely accepted notion that donated blood is the "gift of life" has been thrust under the microscope. Scientific scrutiny is proving quite conclusively that the old notion is deeply flawed. Indeed, all too often, the "gift of life" has become the "bringer of death." Your Body, Your Choice encapsulates a whole new world of thinking. It focuses on the extraordinary revolution destined to have direct and vital impact on the lives of all seeking treatment in hospitals or medical clinics.
I am a life-long reader of non-fiction, with titles chosen often to fill gaps in my knowledge. Wow! So many gaps filled on the subject of Patient Blood Management and Bloodless Medicine and Surgery.
Truly written for the layperson, easy to follow with a vast bibliography and useful Appendices. Quite unputdownable. Glad to know an update to this book is due for publication in March 2023. The title is "Blood Works - An Owner's Guide". I have pre-ordered my copy because I am quite keen to find out what has been happening in this field over the last 20+ years.
As an average health-care consumer, the whole subject of 'informed consent' and the right of self-determination seems strangely below the consciousness of most people. Mine has been awakened, which surely must be a good thing? Feeling indebted is not an over-reaction. There is a lot to mull over after reading this book, a lot to ponder and meditate on. The reader is educated to consider the logic and sense of 'my body = my choice'. Simple, yet profound! Highly recommended.
