Het is hier net het paradijs . Ware het niet dat Roemenië zich in een onmogelijke spagaat bevindt tussen het land dat het is en het land dat het kan zijn. Waar we nog steeds ons huisvuil in de fik moeten steken omdat niemand het op komt halen, waar werklozen vaak liever op straat rondhangen dan bij ons geld verdienen, waar ambtenaren hun dagen slijten in volhardend tegenwerken om nog maar niet te spreken van foute inspecteurs in dikke terreinwagens. Land van lamlendigheid en ijdeltuiterij. Waar tot overmaat van ramp het spook van de balamuc nog steeds uiterst actgief rondwaart. Nee, we geven niet op. Maar zijn we daarmee doorzetters of stomkoppen?

I took this book home with me from the BC-meeting at Terschelling.
The title of this book (It is just like paradise over here) feels like irony / sarcasm when related to the contents of the book.
It is probably a beautiful country (I have no opinion about it, because I've never ben there), but there could have been less descriptions of cruelty to animals imho.
I understand that in Romania things are done differently than we do them here. That animals are regarded as food, as beings who serve humans and who, when they do not serve a purpose anymore, can be eaten or killed. They live there in a way that in the Netherlands I do not know, that I think even my parents have not known. That way is part of their life as it is now, the two of them cannot change society together, not even the habits in their own village, but it is not pleasant to read.
I do not know if I will read the next book (if there will be a next one). Depends on the contents, I guess.
