Pp. xi, 363, 12 plates. Recent quarter green cloth over original paper-covered boards, sm 8vo. This work was written by Nuttall shortly after he joined the faculty of Harvard College. According to Ian MacPhail's bibliography of Nuttall, the plates in this work " are among early examples of pure lithography used for book illustration in America." This process, developed by John Pendleton, was first employed in 1826 or 1827. Old signature of S. Baird dated June 2, 1832 on the half-title and title page. This was probably Samuel Baird, the first professor of Mathematics at the Farmer's High School in Pennsylvania. Later ink stamp on the title page of the "Pennsylvania Forest Research Institute, Mont Alto, Penna." There are no other library marks.
Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) was an English botanist and zoologist who lived and worked in America from 1808 until 1841. Nuttall spent some years as an apprentice printer in England.
