This series has taken me a while to get through because it's not one that I can read for a few minutes and leave. It has long chapters and multiple story lines so I had to make sure I could sit and read for a while. And as it was about the end of the world, sometimes I had to read some 'brain candy' in between sessions!

Things I liked:
1- Likeable characters. I really came to enjoy the boys from the border lands, Dove and his Santos Soldados. They were typical teenage boys in many respects but had a 'calling' to keep their people and towns safe.
2- I did like the multiple story lines. They all connected, in one way or another, so it made sense to continue them. It also gave the authors the ability to cover many aspects of what was going on in the world because it could be told by different characters.
3- The story is told from a Latter-day Saint perspective and uses facts, scriptures and quotes from our church. That being said, I still think members of other religions would enjoy it. It continually talks about the fact that people of any religion were welcomed into the "Temple communities" as long as they were good people with a pure heart and willing to live the rules that had been set in place. It also mentioned the various religious groups working together against evil, as well as various people of other faiths that felt the promptings of the Spirit and followed them. I appreciated that.
4- Even though it is about the end of the world, there was a lot of focus on the hope that comes from living righteously, listening and heeding our leaders and following the teachings of Christ.
5- I still liked the way the authors would open a new passage with a phrase turned from the closing of the last one.
6- I am still trying to figure out why Chinedu refers to his wife by name when writing to his son. Why doesn't he say, "your mother", instead of "Aduare"? And he closes with, "Your father, Chinedu". My husband closes his letters to our children with, "Love, Dad"!
7- Even though Janjalani is an evil man, I thought the authors did a great job of describing how the "shadows"- evil spirits- communicated first through Sepphira and then directly to him, as he continued his descent into more and more evil ways. Also, the way he turned his charm off and on as he convinced others to follow him. Unfortunately, it was also very troubling as we see this type of behavior through history [Hitler, for one] and in the world today.

Things I didn't like:
1- I don't mind a few "big words", and I believe that I have a fairly large vocabulary - but I don't want to have to keep a dictionary handy when reading a novel.
2- Because the books have two authors, sometimes it is very obvious that passages are being written by different people. Sometimes it worked, but other times it felt off. Also, it made for mistakes in wording when the two authors spelled things differently. [ie: jury-rigged and gerry-rigged] A good proof reader should have caught that. They weren't that far apart in the story.
3- The ending was a bit anti-climactic for me. After following so many characters throughout the three books, I felt like they were left hanging. I wanted to know what happened to them.
4- The book ends as the 2nd Coming of Christ occurs, then a follow up letter from Chinedu talking about what their family experienced afterward. Then we jump to the Epilogue which is YEARS later! One of the characters that is age 3 when the book ends is suddenly a grandmother. I'm not sure what I expected, but after reading over 1600 pages of this story I felt unfulfilled [for lack of a better term].

I liked the series, I just think they dragged on too long. I kept thinking that I just wanted to get finished with it, that isn't a good sign for me. I would rather get done and think it got over way too fast! It had way too many main characters and jumped around so much that I just wanted to skip parts and find out what happened to the ones I thought were main characters! It did make me stop and look at my life and what I am doing to prepare for that day, and what needs to get better, so that was a positive!

I enjoyed the last 2 series of this novel. The faith and courage of the Saints inspired me to continue the Lord's work. There were many bad things that happened to the Saints that I never thought about before and made me reflect on myself on whether if I am prepared spiritually when the world turns against us and the Lord? It amazes me how easily we could be blind and miss the message when we are not spiritually prepared. Pride and power can easily overtake us if we're not careful and keeping our covenants. Thanks for a great series!

More like 3.5 stars. This was definitely an interesting series. It's very loosely based on the book of revelation and what *could* happen in the last days before the 2nd coming of Christ. Some of it creeped me out, some of it inspired me, and some of it was cheesy. I feel like the writing could have been better as the stories tended to jump around a lot and sometimes I couldn't keep up with it. An interesting read and it made me think though.

All three of these books could and should have been about 200 pages shorter than they were. The second book in this series is by far the best. I was bored by Garza's plotline, which takes up way too much time in this novel. The final battle was not all that dramatic, nor was...well, anything else. Eh. I'd say, don't waste your time on this series.

I really am excited about the last days. So cool that this author has had some fun writting fiction about it.

I wonder if this is really what the end of the world will be like? Thought provoking.

it's ok. Not real fast paced. It's been hard to keep reading.

Satisfying to read as one of the truer works of fiction set in the final days approaching the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
