Ah, the year 2000! The last possible year in which a 1,007 page ‘pocket book’ encyclopedia of roses could be profitably published. The foreword begins, “What luck to have a rose book you can ... carry to a nursery”. Aside from my mystification over what size pockets the publisher has - this thing weighs at least 5lbs - of course these days you’d just carry your phone instead.

It’s a fun book to own though. It’s wonderful to flip through casually, eyeing all the beauties. Aside from entertainment, I’m not sure how anyone would find useful though. Entries and indexes are alphabetical by the name of rose, so you can’t sort by any other factor. Each entry is 100-150 words. They include interesting tidbits and basic info, but nothing in depth.

Looking through makes me think how much WORK must have been put into this book. Tens of thousands of hours. Photography, research, writing, editing, layout, proofing.

There’s something to be said about the Internet making publishing books of this type no longer possible. Sure, a website, where you could sort entries by garden zone, fragrance, height, sun-requirements, etc., would be far more useful than this thick book that no one could ever fit in their pocket. But money isn’t there online. Not in the gardening world.

I guess this is a relict. It was a gift I shall enjoy and treasure.
