A great book for people who know the bible well and want to have a way to read through quickly without getting bogged down. You will notice some details that were taken out, but the story flows very well and doesn't feel like its being rushed. The most familiar passages that many people have memorized are not condensed and appear the same as they would in the RSV. I would have liked it to be even further condensed (as it is it is reduced by 40% from the RSV) but I realize that it becomes increasingly difficult and controversial the more you take out.
I hesitated to read this knowing important things had to have been omitted. While nothing could or should replace the full Bible, I found this to be fairly well done IMO. With few exceptions the preface, introduction to both testaments, and overviews of each book were especially good, and for that reason alone I will keep this book for reference.
The condensing is a mixed blessing - there are certainly parts that should have been retained, but line by line, much more could have been cut while still retaining the meaning. Overall this is an excellent way to read the Bible much more quickly.
