The Das Lied vom Hurnen Seyfrid (The Lay of The Horned Skin Siegfried) comes from the close of the medieval period and is the last medieval version to focus on the Siegfried/Nibelungen legend. Scholarly opinion of the poem is often varied, some seeing remnants of an old version of the Siegfried dragon fight tale comparable with Fáfnismál and the Thidrekssaga, while other scholars have assigned very little value to the poem. The poem itself is extent in numerous sixteenth century prints with woodcut engravings that accompany the text.

The Hurnen Seyfrid is of very little artistic or poetic value, but may preserve an old oral version of Siegfried's youthful adventures with dragons, giants, dwarves and the rescue of a princess. The poem begins by telling the story of Seyfrid's youth, in which he slays lions and dragons, then he smears himself with their molten blood, and so acquires invulnerable skin, all except for one vulnerable spot between the shoulders. The story continues with the abduction of Krimhilt by a dragon, which Seyfrid seeks out and slays with the help of a treacherous giant named Kuperan and the kindly dwarf Eugel. He obtains the Nibelungen treasure, which he throws into the Rhine. The poem closes with a brief glimpse into the future, revealing Seyfrid's death and Krimhilt's revenge.

Kenneth King, an expert on the text of the Hurnen Seyfrid presents a very good critical introduction, discussing the printed versions of the text and the origins of the poem, while establishing it among the other primary texts of the Siegfried legend. He also looks at the woodcuts contained in the printed versions, the language of the poem and the poets artistic technique. King's critical edition of the text utilises all the available prints to establish a critical edition of a much neglected but important poem. The poem was used for the 1726 chap book version called Historia vom Gehörnten Siegfried and Hans Sachs' Der Hürnen Seufrid, Tragoedie in Sieben Acten. The poem is also important to Wagner fans because of Wagner's use of the poem in Siegfried, the third section of his Nibelungen drama.

„Das Lied vom Hürnen Seyfrid“ ist ein weiterer Mittelhochdeutscher Text, der sich durch das Universum des Nibelungenliedes bewegt. „Das Lied vom Hürnen Seyfrid“ erzählt genau die Geschichte, die das Nibelungenlied nicht erzählt, die der Drachentöter Episode von Siegfried.

In einer leicht abgewandelten Form erfahren wir, wie der Held Sigfrid den berühmten Drachen tötet, in seinem Blut badet und die schöne Jungfrau Kriemhild rettet.

Im Gegensatz zum Nibelungenlied wird hier der Anfang von Sigfrieds leben und auch sein Ende in einer stark gerafften Version erzählt. Zudem rettet er hier Kriemhild vor dem bösen Drachen, im Nibelungenlied lernt er dieser erst kennen, als die Drachentötung schon Jahre zurückliegt.

Auf sprachlicher Ebene stehen wir wieder vor demselben Problem wie auch bei andren Mittelhochdeutschen Texten, die Übersetzung mag sehr gut sein, doch an das Original kommt er oft nicht heran.

„Das Lied vom Hürnen Seyfrid“ ist meiner Meinung nach ein nette Erzählung die sich seht gut ergänzend zum Nibelungenlied lesen lässt. So sollte man, wenn man das Nibelungenlied noch nicht kennt, einen Bogen um diesen Text machen.


Ein Buch das man lesen kann, jedoch nicht unbedingt muss.
