Christiane Ellis Valone Curator of American Paintings, National Gallery of Art In his more than 40-year association with the National Gallery, Franklin Kelly has held several positions, including deputy director and chief curator from 2008 to 2020. A specialist in American and British paintings, he holds degrees in art history from the University of North Carolina (BA), Williams College (MA), and the University of Delaware (PhD). He has organized exhibitions and written books and articles on American and British artists, including Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, John Constable, J.M.W. Turner, George Bellows, and Edward Hopper. He is also a distinguished affiliate of the Department of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Maryland.
