Chesimard’s fantasy world, complete with fabricated moniker “Assata Shakur,” left a trail of death and mayhem which was all too real. Her incredible action-packed reign of terror, which included hurling a live hand grenade at police, culminated with the cold-blooded execution of New Jersey State Trooper, Werner Foerster on the infamous New Jersey Turnpike.
After her arrest, trial, conviction, and life prison sentence, Chesimard’s radical comrades broke her out of prison in a well-planned, daring, made-for-movies, escape. She then brazenly flaunted her freedom for decades while basking in the safe-haven of Castro’s Cuba, earning her the distinction of the first woman ever to be named to the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List.
To top it off, she’s somehow emerged as an iconic folk hero to millions of radicals across the globe, and is the most revered convicted cop-killer of 20th century Americana. Her brutal actions and radical philosophies are disputed, minimized or ignored altogether in order to raise her status to mythic-like proportions - all without answer from a law-abiding, justice-seeking perspective ... until now.
