This is a really good book on the basics of physiology and anatomy. It gives a run through of each body system and how that particular system works with the others to gain homeostasis. There is some propaganda though. That was pretty disappointing, but it's easy to spot and disregard.

pitched at a great level for the average reader, offers a lucid tour of essentially every system in the body. I liked how it relied on scientifically accepted ideas and didn't veer into speculation. Contains some chemistry and physics so you'll probably be most comfortable if you have a least some high school chem.
