Susan Handley grew up in the Midlands and despite a love of literature, and crime fiction in particular, she never dreamt of being able to carve out a career as a published writer. But the desire to write never left her and after years of writing by night she has at last been able to share the results of her efforts.

Susan now lives in a small village in rural Kent with her husband and three cats. When she’s not indulging in her love of writing crime fiction she loves walking (the hillier the better), bike riding (the flatter the better) and tending her veggie patch.

When an elderly woman is found murdered in her own home DI Matt Fisher is given the case. Shortly afterwards, another woman dies in similar circumstances, DI Fisher, assisted by DC Beth Nightingale and his guide dog Luna, must look for anything to link the victims in the hope of preventing more lives being lost.
Fisher may be blind but his instincts are as sharp as ever, though even he begins to question whether they are sharp enough when the investigation hits dead end after dead end.
With no obvious motive and the fact that the women had nothing in common, Fisher consults Dr Martha Woolf, a university psychologist and expert on serial killers.
With the cases piquing the academic’s interest, the two join forces and as a result, the investigation takes a turn nobody could have expected, including the killer.

I loved the first book in the DI Matt Fisher series Paid In Blood when I read it in 2021, so leapt at the chance to read the follow up. Matt Fisher is an excellent character, blinded in an acid attack he is negotiating a different world and has to fight for his position at work. His DCI is an irritation, trying to get him put on the cold case review team but Fisher wants active cases and bulldozes his way very successfully in to investigate the murder of an elderly woman Margery (Em) Walker, who he knows. The case rapidly escalates when another death follows and Fisher fights to stay on the case and do it his way.

Fisher and Nightingale have a great relationship and the fact that Fisher is blind makes it a really interesting read, far different from the usual police procedural fare. It makes you think and be more aware of your surroundings that’s for sure. I read this in one sitting as I just couldn’t put it down, taken on a twisting dance, the plotting is just great; it is clever and just brilliantly crafted. An absolute cracker of a book! When’s book 3 coming?

Exciting and realistic crime thriller

DI Matt Fisher (and his dog Luna) are being overlooked for new cases until DI Fisher makes a compelling case for himself, and DC Beth Nightingale, to be the prime investigators of the murder of an old woman. However the crime throws up few clues as to who did it and then a 2nd murder brings even more urgency.

In this police procedure thriller, not only is DI Fisher struggling to find the killer, he is also being challenged by his boss “the Falcon”, who wants consign him to desk jobs on account of his blindness. As the pressure and tension builds, DI Fisher uses the services of a Professor of Psychology who provides interesting insights into the case but gets them no closer to solving the murders.

A slow burn first few chapters then turns into a twisty and realistic read, with plenty of excitement in the race against time to stop the murders. So realistic indeed that I did wonder if I was at risk of the same fate – think I’m ok! DI Fisher and his team are all great characters that add depth and interest to this involving thriller. I really enjoyed DI Fisher’s determination to prove to any doubters, that his blindness does not stop him being a great detective and that he is more than capable of working on live crimes. The ending was clever and satisfying.

Cold Kill can be read as standalone thriller; it is the second book in the DI Matt Fisher Crime Thriller series.

The second book in the DI Matt Fisher Crime Thriller series but read well as a stand-alone, although I think reading the first would have set the scene. Fisher is back working after having being blinded in an acid attack which took place in the previous book. He believes he is capable of doing his job whereas his boss thinks he should be retired. He is once again working with partner DC Beth Nightingale with the addition of his guide dog, Luna.

Briefly, when an elderly women is murdered Fisher asks for the case. Reluctantly he is made SIO. When another body is found and there are no obvious motives or connections between the women Fisher calls in Martha Wolfe a psychologist for help.

A clever police procedural thriller with many blind alleys (no pun intended) as Fisher tries to resolve the case, all the time with his boss on his back. If, I felt, a slightly overlong story it certainly presents an unusual twist with the use of a blind detective and I lived his determination not to let his disability stop him doing his job. The team dynamics are excellent and it’s good to see the assistance he gets from his colleagues when needed. Some great twists and turns in a faced paced plot and a satisfying ending.

This is the second outing for blind detective, DI Matt Fisher, his loyal partner DC Beth Nightingale and Matt’s guide dog, Luna. In Cold Kill someone is targeting elderly ladies but with no clues to go on and an antagonistic DCI Anita Fallon who would love nothing better than to see Fisher gone, he knows he must find the killer before time runs out for him. The camaraderie between Fisher, Nightingale and the rest of his team is fabulous and with the introduction of psychology professor Martha Woolf who’s happy to butt heads with the DCI, what is a dark storyline is interspersed with some deliciously sharp lines.
This is a fast paced, gripping story which had me hooked from the first page and kept me reading until late at night. It was also very refreshing to read a story where the detective, although blind refuses to let his disability rule his life as he juggles the trials of the job with the trials of being a father to a teenage son. I would highly recommend Cold Kill and I’m already looking forward to reading the third in this great series by Susan.

Blind detective DI Matt Fisher and his sidekick Nightingale, (not forgetting guide dog Luna) investigate the death by strangulation of an elderly woman. There seem to be no clues, then the body count rises. I really enjoyed the twists and turns of this story, and the exciting climax. A great second book in the series.

DI Matt Fisher and DC Beth Nightingale are bamboozled when an elderly woman is murdered with no apparent motive. The murderer leads them on a merry dance and they call on a University Professor who has a strong interest in and knowledge of serial killers. This was a great read, although I don't like the DCI. You wonder how she got to the position she is now in.
