Practice Standard for Earned Value Management

Rate this book
The Practice Standard for Earned Value Management—Second Edition expands on the earned value information in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) –Fourth Edition. EVM is often referred to as “management with the lights on” because it helps objectively and succinctly identify where a project is and where it is going. The methodology incorporates project scope, schedule and costs, and the process is applicable across many Knowledge Areas and Process Groups. This practice standard is intended for anyone who wants to better develop their project management toolset and know how to potentially improve project performance through the use of earned value.

Earned value management (EVM) is the most famous and used techniques used in project control now.
The PMI provides here a standard of how to develop a successful EVM system and compatible with the PMI methodology.
The big disadvantage of this practice guide is that it is based on a very old version of PMBOOK (3nd edition).
I read it while I am preparing to take the PMI-SP certificate test and I will go back to it one more time before the test

Pros: Good level of detail about EVM. Good design and information delivery.

Cons: Not many. It hits the spot.

Bottom line: Well written. Full of critical info. It was a lot more interesting to read than the PMBOK Guide. Must read before PMP certification test.
