The Gilman family is stationed in Vienna, Austria, in 1956, at the height of the Cold War. While Jim works undercover for the CIA at the American Embassy, Peggy spends the Christmas holidays conducting an unofficial murder investigation. She discovers that all of the suspects have hidden depths and will go to great lengths to disguise their pasts-rather like Vienna itself.
I enjoyed this book more for the history of Vienna in the 50s, I think, than for the mystery itself. I did learn more about a period of history that I am not particularly well-versed on; the author wrote knowledgeably as she comes out of that context herself, according to her afterword. Still, it was a light read and enjoyable. I wouldn't say this is a "must read," but I'd put it as a "nice to have on a rainy or snowy day read."
