This is the second is the Border Trilogy .... the first was All the Pretty Horses. This is another classic McCarthy. The writing is tight and vivid but there is an over-use of Spanish here which was very distracting. I started trying to translate with Google but finally gave it up and just let the "gist" keep me going. I have to say that part one of this story is so well-written and compelling that I neglected everything else while I was reading it. I won't share the ending of part one but I will say that I was so involved that upon completing part one, I threw the book across the room and cried for twenty-minutes. The rest of the book is long and repetitive but if one is a lover of words then it is definitely worth the read. I have never been disappointed by Cormac McCarthy....but I cannot read another of his offerings just yet. I have to let this one sink in for a while. The final book in the trilogy...The Cities of the Plain....is waiting for me on my nightstand....when I am a little more emotionally stable I can start on it !
