I was really excited about getting this devotional book! I mean, REALLY excited. As much as I want to know God's Word-dig down deep kind of knowing, I have a hard time with studying of any kind. It's not easy for me. (Is it for anybody, though?!) I've never been one to study. I didn't in school, and I'm absolutely amazed that I got good grades. I zone out in lectures, too!

This devotional book has 6 lessons per week. The devotionals are only 1-2 pages each day. They are great whether you need a quick devotional or a good study. You can easily pair this book with commentaries and online study tools that could take this from a 5 minute study to a longer one, which is what I recommend. I haven't did that for every lesson. Some lessons don't triger quite as much studying opportunity as others.

I like that this book is a great way to compare the New Living Translation Bible with my favorite, the New King James Version. When the Bible verses are listed throughout the devotional, I like to look them up in the NKJV, too. It lets me compare in small doses. It gets me into the Bible! There's also great background information about the times, which I love!

I don't like that some of the devotionals have bad wording for my tastes. For example:

"If Jesus had been just a very good man, his life and death would have provided a great example of how a person should live. We could honor him and learn from his lifestyle. If Jesus had been only a great human teacher or orator, we could be motivated and inspired to work and achieve. But a great moral leader and powerful speaker can't save us from our sins, can't change us on the inside. Jesus can. As the divine Creator, he has the power to make us new."

I completely understand where they were trying to go with this, but it's just wrong. IF Jesus was just a good man, then He was a liar and led millions of people astray. That's not exactly what I would call a good role model. He was so much more than just a good man, though!!!! Again, I feel it was just bad wording, and I do understand what they were trying to say. I know! I'm being a little bit picky there, but I just didn't like it. ;)

Overall, I really love the Bible verses and background history, but I'm not in love with the devotional parts. I have read things that I disagreed with. I've already learned a great deal, though, and I plan to continue with the studies. There's a year's worth of devotionals, so in order to do a timely post, I haven't read every single one.

I was given a copy of this book by Tyndale to review. It is in a form of a large paperback book, very easy to use. Each week has a devotion for Monday through Friday and one for the weekend. This book is based on The Gospels. It goes through the life of Jesus. On the side bars there are scripture references that you are to read each day plus a section called Talking To God that gives you an idea of how to lead your prayer time for the day. You are given background information to help "set the scene" for the day. It is longer on Monday. The Getting Personal section gives you questions to help you personalize the days devotion to your life. In the back of the book you will find a Topical Index and a Scripture Index.

I am enjoying this devotional. The way it is set up makes it easy and enjoyable. It isn't too long for those of us that have so much going on in our lives but helps us get into the Word on a daily basis and find ways to apply it to our daily lives. It gives us some good questions to ponder as we go about our day. I would recommend this to anyone who needs some structure in their daily devotions.
