Just like with her devotional entitled "A Spectacle of Glory: God's Light Shining through Me Every Day" (among others), this one is just as good and meaningful and would make a great gift. As I mentioned before about Joni, her thoughts and comments usually resonate with me on a daily basis. She presents a scripture each day and then gives you commentary or quotes someone else that relates to the scripture/theme ending with an application and a brief prayer. At the end is the index of all the scripture references used and their corresponding date. As she mentions in the beginning, this devotional in part came out of a season of great pain and hardship like none other. These painful experiences produced a precious gem because of God's grace in her life. She is the best!
Insights from a hero who knows her heroics come from the Saviour Jesus. Gentle reminders and challenges, and words of comfort, this book is a huge encouragement to me. You will fall a bit more in love with God through reading it.
I loved this daily devotional by Joni Eareckson Tada. In this book, she gently reminds us that our true "gems" come from God. Each reading draws us to God's Word and His promises. Joni provides encouragement and challenges us, in our daily walk with the LORD.
While I found some of the passages uplifting, for the most part I found the author to be quite negative, judgmental, and self-righteous, even flat-out saying in several passages that her handicap made her a better Christian than able-bodied people, because if you're healthy, you WILL take God for granted. That's unfair and untrue. I also took issue with the fact that she said flat-out in one passage that if you are in a dead-end, loveless marriage, ending that marriage will damn your soul. That's... while I've never been through a divorce, I do not judge those that have due to unhappiness. I was not looking for something judgmental, self-righteous, putting-yourself-on-a-pedestal-above-all-"lower beings" type of book. I want ones that connect to my life, that help me feel more connected to God and that make me feel uplifted afterwards. Not... angry.
