Harm reduction, especially regarding alcohol is a misunderstood concept. This book in particular is backed by a determination to address the "sticky middle", the drinkers out there who have a little too much and are not going to be helped by twelve step programs or even attend them in the first place. Bell's approach is straightforward and I believe evidence based. This is well worth a look for anyone who is among the thousands of people who want to enjoy drinking their entire lives. My only worry is its failure to address the intense pleasure and relief drinkers get from drinking. That's not a big flaw but the pleasure and relief are driving motivations that begs to be considered.
Great book if you are looking to moderate your drinking, without joining a cult. Her sources include The American Psychiatric Association, studies from Britian,Canada and Australia as well as the U.S. I understand that this type of method won't work for everyone. If there wasn't such an industry built around intervention and rehab and the stigma that goes along with all that, more people might have a chance to find a solution that works for them as individuals, instead of having to "hit bottom", as they say.
Interesting concept all about moderation...a bit too much of the self-help crap, but overall, a good thought process to think about. When you stop to think and are conscious of how much you are drinking, it can be shocking or turned into a challenge.
Great book. Easy way to curb your drinking. For me drinking wine is one of the great pleasures of life. To have a defined goal or a predetermined drinking plan was very helpful and eliminated those horribly unproductive mornings.
