This is kind of a "Dummies" book for home wiring. It is perfect for people who have no experience or knowledge of electricity or electrical wiring. It gives you the basics on electricity and how it is supplied to the home. It then discusses the basics of home wiring, how it works and what is what. There is a section on electrical safety and the tools needed, and then there are step by step directions on how to make repairs that can easily be done by inexperienced homeowners.
We had a basement light switch that was bad. It would make some clicking noises and sometimes the lights would not come on when the switch was flipped to the "on" position. Sometimes the lights would go off by themselves when I was in the basement. Then it became difficult to get the lights to turn on at all.
I purchased the parts we needed to replace the light switch at the hardware store for about $6. I decided to upgrade the switch to a rocker type and that was more expensive, plus it required a new switch plate. Otherwise the replacement switch would have only cost about $1.40.
My husband and I then replaced the switch in about 15 minutes, using the step by step directions in the book. It works great! And we saved probably about $150 doing it ourselves.
