In Other Words: Women Directors Speak

Rate this book
Representing television drama, the London Fringe, the avant garde, the regional theatre, and the large national theatres -- the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Royal National Theatre- In Other Words traces the training, approaches, prerehearsal processes, rehearsal techniques, and directing philosophies of fourteen women directors who work primarily in the British Isles. Generously illustrated with photographs of productions under their direction, the thoughts and words of these fourteen determined, creative, and accomplished women offer all of us who labor in and love the theatre a unique perspective that will illuminate, educate, and inspire.

I found this book to be very unorganized. Granted that’s very hard to do when you’re interviewing 14 different women. It read as if it was a five paragraph essay from high school. While some ideas were interesting to take into account, it was hard to give them any time of day cause you forget who you’re reading about.

The insights on rehearsals and text interpretation were the most interesting. Difficult structure or lack thereof but I didn’t mind it. I want to direct a play now!!
