Isekai Veteran: Mendicant

Rate this book
Taylor is dead. Again.

Sure, the royal family had him assassinated. But since he isn't going to stay dead, Taylor decides to pursue the career of his wandering monster hunter and healer. He will leave his old name behind, see new places, make new friends, and fight new foes. As he gets the hang of being a mendicant disciple, Taylor will plumb the secrets of Tenobre and its lost history.

Unknowingly, he leaves behind a city in turmoil. The residents of Girona are angry over Taylor's disappearance. Duke Frenzio is still pulling strings in the capital while an untried king sits on the throne. Before winter is done, Girona will be pushed to the edge of destruction, and Taylor's friends will have to fight for the city if they want to save it.

Meanwhile the young mendicant's questions will take him to Enclave, the center of the Unity Church, to seek advice from his former teacher. What he finds there isn't the spiritual home that he hoped for, but a deeply compromised institution. Can the Unity change to face a dangerous future? Or will they cling to a failing tradition and doom all of Tenobre?

Despite his best efforts, Taylor found himself on the wrong end of an alliance of entrenched interests. Since he's currently supposed to be dead, he takes his disciple name of Phillip the Younger and heads out to see more of the world. But the world is in more trouble than the authorities are willing to admit, and he's starting to uncover some of its deeper mysteries.

A good chunk of this book feels like a reaction---Taylor is alive, when he should by all rights be dead, but he's now more aware than ever that he'll need to work to ensure things stay that way. He's suffering from stress, shock, and trauma. His travels are part exploratory but mostly escape, and trying to ensure that nobody but his few friends on the outside can recognize that Taylor and Phillip are one and the same.

There's also a decent amount of attention paid to the loose threads he left behind. I liked Inez struggling with her morals versus her duty. Or Maia, coming from the Enclave's Leadership to investigate why the king thinks the church owes him gold.

The king's retirement is also one of the many changes to the political landscape. Taylor benefited a little from King Joachim's selfishness initially, but what spared his life in the beginning ultimately came after it in the end. The new king, Leonardo, is introduced here, and despite the potential for something better, many of the same problems remain.

Overall this is a great followup. It isn't brushing off the problems Taylor's having with how the previous book ended, but it keeps them understated enough that his trauma is always a lurking specter rather than the primary focus. The worldbuilding continues to impress, and the characters all feel like real people (good and bad alike). Highly Recommended.

Excellent second book

I finished book one just a few days ago and since then I've been reading this in every spare moment. It's a page turner for sure. I'm looking forward to reading the rest.

Excellent world building and characters. Thank you CJ Holmes.
