This is not simply a book of poems. It is a confessional.
A Collection of Unsaid Truths presents a testimony about the stubbornness of emotions and an unwillingness to feel without knowing how to explain and express those emotions. Author Halima B.H. shares her way of making sense of her feelings, new and foreign and too strong to ignore. She once felt too ashamed to own up to them, so she left them unspoken and wrote about them instead.
Emergence embraces the social element of being human without forgetting that everything begins with oneself; that is why the book's only capitalised letter is I. These essays explore various truths—some of the author's own truths and others intended to speak up for those who can't. The author dedicates her work to everyone who lives through the things they feel so profoundly.
This collection of original writing invites you on the many journeys that a broken heart can take to find meaning and purpose—and perhaps even healing, redefinition, and redirection.
“The most resilient thing a broken/shattered heart can do is not to break another on its journey to heal.”
Excerpt From Emergence by Halima B.H
I can’t believe that I am the first person reviewing this book. I’ve always liked poetry but it’s hard to find something that isn’t too flowery or not vivid enough for my taste. After reading the first page, I started hoping this collection wouldn’t disappoint, and now that I have completed it, I am pleased to say that I was not disappointed.
“I use my hands to muffle the sounds, not knowing these secrets are like water— dripping between my fingers.”
Raw truths, unfiltered emotions, and unrequited love. Lessons learned, mistakes enabled, and self-forgiveness. I was going to make a comment about how Halima BH is Nigeria’s answer to Rupi Kaur at her best, but that comparison is never necessary, the sky is big enough for them both. Halima writes with such honesty and authenticity that is hard to come across in Arewa (re: northern Nigerian and Muslim) literature about mistakes, love, and healing. I love this so much, and I am so happy that I came across it.
