I'm a Czech that is interested in languages, Czech included. I try to be inventive when I speak Czech, and I'm always interested in slang dictionaries to work both on my Czech and English.
This is the first book from the Dirty Languages series I've read. In general, I can recommend it. It is written in an entertaining way and it covers a wide variety of situations. Also, you can learn about the Czech culture. However, take what you read with a grain of salt. Opinions most certainly differ, and you can end up offending somebody in a regrettable way.
Unfortunately, there are things that are really weird or plain wrong, such as:
– Pronouncing check section: there are a couple of things that are definitely incorrect: "'ch' sounds like 'k' in 'cock'" – it really doesn't, or "'ň' sounds like soft 'ni' in 'onion'" – not really.
– 'nashledanou' – it's always spelled separately in Czech.
– spelling 'tequila' as 'tekila' and 'crack' as 'krek' seems *very* odd to me.
– if you are watching an ice-hockey match, you should chant "Jedeme, hoši, jedeme", not "jedém Češi, jedém".
Overall, I found the book both informative and entertaining, and I would recommend it to people learning Czech or coming to the Czech Republic. Some of the stuff might be a misleading and you should only use it with friends, but I'm sure Czechs will be more than happy to discuss the intricacies of the Czech language and slang.
