We had this as a follow-up to minna no nihongo, which means there was quite some overlap, but that's okay; it's better to have the same thing explained to you twice than not at all, after all. I think the methods are comparable otherwise. Each chapter starts with a conversation that's on the CD, which uses the grammatical constructions you're going to encounter. The whole method is Japanese, so your grammatical explanation is also in Japanese; this may be a bit confusing when you're still studying, so it's probably not so good for self-study. Personally, I like the Japanese study method, i.e. a lot of repetition: 'here's how you conjugate that verb, now do it about twenty times'. It made it easier for me personally to use the conjugations in conversations; you don't need to think about it for very long after doing it so many times. There are also listening exercises near the end of the chapter and some longer assignments. Most assignments are in the answering key, so once you understand the grammar, you can work with it on your own.
