Brilliant little picture book (in an excellent translation from Danish) about a small boy called Vitello, who gets a new neighbour who is, to his horror, a girl and not a cool boy called Wayne or the like, and how Vitello comes to terms with this calamity.

The Danish author Kim Fupz Aakeson clearly knows children, and the Vitello books are certainly a different take on childhood from a lot of picture books. The tone is ironic but with a heart - presumably why, to my delight, the books have been translated for a British audience.

I'm quite pleased that my youngest daughter picked this one up in London a few days ago and not automatically (only, at least) the more princess-y like books for her age.

There is a little bit of fighting sexism in terms of understanding that no one dies from hanging out with people of opposite gender as a child, but the girl was kind of terrible of Vitello since she would not listen to him, when he was not interested anymore. Also, we got slurs towards native americans for no reason again.

Er bare kæmpe fan af Vitello. Og denne Vitello er som sædvanlig super. Mine børnehaveklassebørn og jeg grinede meget. Og bogen giver efterfølgende anledning til god snak om 'klamme kærester' og bare snakken om at pige og drenge venskaber faktisk er okay 😊
