Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) werd uitgeroepen tot grootste sportman van de twintigste eeuw. Ali gebruikte zijn positie als topatleet om zich te uiten als overtuigd moslim, als strijder voor gelijke rechten en de keuzevrijheid om je pacifistisch op te kunnen stellen in oorlogstijd. Die unieke combinatie liet hem uitgroeien tot een van de grootste iconen van de 20ste eeuw. Maar wat is het echte, volledige verhaal van de 'Greateast of All Time'?



Op aanstekelijk wijze en met veel verstand van zaken volgt Marc Hendrickx in deze complete biografie Ali's leven. Niet alleen zijn bokscarrire, maar ook religie, politiek en gezondheid komen aan bod. Deze gingen in het leven van de bokser hand in hand met zijn sportieve prestaties.



Ali's enorme drive en zijn grote mentale weerbaarheid lopen als een rode draad door het boek. De man moest vele obstakels overwinnen en heeft dat met verve gedaan. Niet alleen als sporter, maar vooral ook als mens. Ali was een grootheid, dat tonen de talloze authentieke verhalen in dit boek overtuigend aan.

I was a bit disappointed. The emphasis was more on his (boxing)fights and less about his troubled life. More photographs would make it more interesting. The photos were put in the middle section and had no connection to the text at that point.

This book offers a solid overview of Muhammad Ali's origins, rise to fame, controversies, setbacks, cultural impact... and eventually his declining health with regard to Parkinson's disease. The grammar is sometimes flawed (or even sloppy) and in some segments the author's enthousiasm regarding certain events come over as sheer fanboy-ism. The author also takes quite some shots at Joe Frazier portraying him as a sour grape, underplaying the things that Ali said and did to him. The last few chapters of the book give a good account of what Ali gave back to the community despite his declining health. To me, these chapters were the most well written and enjoyable of the entire book. The book somehow doesn't really scratch the itch when it comes to all I would like to know about Muhammad Ali within the context of that era. I'm curious to see what the book 'Ghosts of Manila' will add to the story. For what it's worth, this book seems like a good start to get a feel of what the golden age of heavyweight boxing looked like.

This book will not only motivate you to box but also overwin a life obstacle like Mohammed Ali did in his fight against discrimination to not go to the war, his never giving up input. What an amazing motivation he gave deffinetly worth reading. Mohammed Ali was productive he made a lot of offert even no sex 8 weeks before the fight. I can learn a lot from him
