Ken Bebelle has been an avid reader of fantasy, science fiction, and comic books his entire life. His first foray into writing was in the eighth grade with a sword and sorcery fantasy story stored on a 5.25” floppy disk.

Ken and his co-author, Julia Vee, recently finished Ebony Gate, an Asian-inspired contemporary fantasy set in the Pacific Rim. Ebony Gate was acquired by Claire Eddy at TOR and will debut in summer 2023 as the first in a trilogy. Ken and Julia have also self-published another series, Seattle Slayers, an urban fantasy set in a post-apocalyptic Seattle. In his spare time, Ken is married, has two grown children, ponders the cyberpunk novel that he has yet to write, and tries to grow tomatoes in his meager backyard.

I was quite bummed when I found out this was the last book in the series, but I guess I’ll survive. I eagerly started this one, and I was so very excited to be back in Tyree and Roxy’s world. With the events at the end of the book before I wondered what was going to happen with those changes, and I’m glad to say that it’s nothing but really good changes. In this latest, poor Roxy and Tyree are dealing with the fallout that Roxy being Tyree’s Chosen has brought to them, and it isn’t easy going. Add to that dealing with O’Malley, there is lots of action, tears, laughter, and joy. This is a fitting ending, and I’m glad to say this isn’t the last series in this universe, and hopefully we’ll see all the characters soon. Well-written, interesting, wonderful urban fantasy that is well worth your time. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I was so excited to be back in Seattle for the conclusion of Roxy’s portion of the Slayers story. Book four was pretty action packed from the get go and I couldn’t put it down. It laid the foundation for quite a few more storylines deep in the Slayers world and I can’t wait to continue on with Daughter of the Hinterlands and hopefully get to the bottom of things.

Book four really showed Roxy come into her own, deciding what truthfully was most important to her - her title as a Slayer vs her loved ones, what was expected of her vs what was the right thing to do, independence or a life with the Trueborn Prince of the Night Court. It was fun to see Roxy interact with her sister as well as her usual crew. I did feel one or two of the major climactic points felt slightly rushed (or maybe I was just wishing to even more to the story). Lots of loose ends were left and I can’t wait to see how all of my questions will be answered as we move on into the next portion of the Seattle Slayers. I feel like this world still has so much to offer and I’m pumped for it to continue!

I love this!!!

Lord! It would be easier to tell you what doesn’t happen in this book! And I do like the ending, makes me think there will be more in store for this couple farther on down the line. At least I hope there will be.
So much action in this one. Things happen that you couldn’t have picked up on from book three!!
You absolutely must read this!

I really liked this story, which is why the last book was so upsetting. The ending was a complete let down. Now I'm guessing that the author is going to do more with the loose ends in other books that focus on different characters, but this just felt so rushed and didn't feel like anything was concluded.

****SPOILERS**** DO NOT READ PAST THIS LINE UNLESS YOU READ THE COMPLETE SERIES

Tyee and Roxy needed more chemistry early in the books, and definitely more time to settle their differences in the end of the books. The whole we ran away from the powerful queen thing, is just not believable. This big bad Queen is just going to let her son leave like that? Roxy liked living in the Veil and she was a Breaker and a Maker, which should have been just a huge thing in and of itself, and yet she is just OK with leaving without magic?

The bad guys escape, so no closure.

The Slayers are still a mess, the mystery of Tanner and his dealings remains a mystery. This ended nothing for me and I have no desire to read a story about Delia or any of the other established characters. As a completed series, this failed. The writing was great, the story was great, the action was great, her journey and self discovery was great...but nothing at the end was really settled. And for me that was a massive let down after waiting four books with all these questions.

This is why even though there was so much good here, this series is going in my list of books that wasted my time.

Good Story but Left Dissatisfied

I’m not going to give this a lower rating because the writing is good and the story is good, but I feel like Roxy had to give up a lot to get her “happy ending.” I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll try to keep this vague. I’m hoping that in future stories maybe she’ll reappear and get some of the other things she loves back. I felt let down by the ending. She ended up being what she didn’t want, and while I know she overcame a lot of those feelings and had accepted some things, that was a lot more than she was expecting, and I feel like it’s an unfair and unequal ending that doesn’t make for long term happiness. I know it’s just a story, but I need more believability even in fantasy, and I can’t see the character that was built happy long term where she was left. I still recommend this series because it is good. I just personally would have liked the ending to not feel like the FMC had to sacrifice so much more. Not saying she gained nothing, because she did, but she lost a lot too.

Series that had such a great begging started to slide down really fast. From logical loopholes (like MH always breaking leg bones when she could go for the neck and kill her enemies instantly) to her always ignoring all the red flags just to 'follow in her daddy's footsteps. There is so many questions and so many things that are still unanswered. Who are the Talim, what power ower people inked crystals have? What happened to the horde on the other side of the portal. Roxy just packed up and left???? And tadam happy end ?? It should be half of the series not the end! It feels like a TV series that didn't get founding for next season and had to patch up lousy endings to opened subplots just to try to make it work and it doesn't! Dissatisfied and disappointed

I don't know. The romance felt flat and the story fell short.
