Rate this book
General Sternwood has four million dollars, and two young daughters, both pretty and both wild. He's an old, sick man, close to death, but he doesn't like being blackmailed. So he asks private detective Philip Marlowe to get the blackmailer off his back. Marlowe knows the dark side of life in Los Angeles well, and nothing much surprises him. But the Sternwood girls are a lot wilder than their old father realizes. They like men, drink, drugs - and it's not just a question of blackmail.

What a dark retold Oxford Bookworms's book this was! Of course this retold book isn't suitable for any children because it contains not just crime, but the manipulation, sex, rackets, and more of the crime world of Los Angeles in the 1920s. The relationship between the character in this book is a bit simple than it would be, there are many characters that sometimes I forgot them, but thanks to the author for the reminders information whenever a character reappeared. I think in the full version, the characters will have more complicated personalities, which make them did the actions in the story. This story is full of surprise, too. Raymond Chandler is an excellent story teller for me. And the way Marlowe devote to his work, with courage and honest, in a world full of crimes and bad things made me admired. I'd love to be a man like him someday.

Classic detective novel. Fast paced and spontaneous story line with bold characters. The chapter titles gave away the outcome of each chapter but it didn’t really matter because each chapter was over so quickly. Quick and easy Saturday morning read.

I don't know how much Kerr's writing differs from the original but that was an exciting read. Loved the atmosphere. The whole r/menwritingwomen part less so.

This book is a thriller very interesting but very complicated. Fortunately I wrote a short summary of each chapter and did not lose. It was fun because I always imagined that Marlowe's face was Bogart's.

One of the classics of hard-boiled detective novels. A lot less dated than I thought it would be. Some of it does seem a bit cliche, but it's tough to fault the book when it was a pioneer that spawned so many other similar books and movies. He tells the story at a good pace, in a straight-forward and interesting writing style. Overall a good book.

Algunas partes las he visto sin sentido y con la sensación de solamente rellenar páginas. Una historia muy predecible y llega hasta cansar un poco.
