I like Erik Johanssons photography very much. His previous books have been fantastic and my ratings of them reflects that. Sadly, I cannot give his latest book the same high rating.
To briefly describe its content, it is a mix of already published artworks and some new, plus an introduction and some "behind the scenes" skecthes and writings. Out of the 211 pages there are 37 photos which are newer than 2019, which if I recall correctly is when his last book came out.
First of all, these may be too few to make up a whole separate book, but in my opinion some of them are not strong enough to stand out against the older photos, so given that I already own his previous book this makes me a tiny little bit disappointed.
Second, and I may be slightly biased here, since I tend to remember most the "greatest hits" or highlights from the years 2008-2013, and between 2013-2019 there's some ups and downs, but still mostly ups. The photos in the book from 2020 are quite good, altough they loose some effect to the fact that they'ven been published on social media for quite some time. Though I'm sure they will look fantastic at an exhibition. However from 2021 and on the photos in my opinios feels like they loose their strength a bit, they don't stand out in themselves as I feel the older ones do. Plus, even though it may be intentional, either as a new variant or just to play on the audience's recollection, some of them feel like they've been done before. Like "River Hotel" to give an example, which feels very much like "Landfall". (Landfall was and is an old favorite of mine, and River Hotel is actually also very good, potentially a new favorite, but still.)
Altogether, there are quite a few new photos here, some of them are really great, some maybe a little less to my preference. In the end it's of couse all a matter of personal taste and liking, but when I look through the book, the photos I stop to think the most on, are usually earlier than 2019.
So I'm currently giving this book a rating of 3 because it's both a great collection, but also a great recollection of older memories. Had the new photos been published separately only by themselves I would probably only have given them a rating of 2 instead.
