A very well-written book

I was intrigued by the book's title and cover photo. I wanted tо see what іt had tо offer. I was not disappointed, as I enjoyed every bit оf it. This іs the second book оf Samrat Yudhisthira Trilogy.

The book reveals the deep complexities оf Mahabharata. The virtuous king Yudhishthir, also known as Dharmaraj, undergoes the ultimate trial оf his conviction and bravery. In the epic war that rattles the earth and the heavens, He guides his brothers and allies through the hardships. The story іs shaped by his commitment tо Dharma, The eternal law that governs the cosmic order.

Heroism іs not about appearance оr abilities, But a vision оf one's own flaws. To accept them and overcome them, That іs the sign оf a true hero And Yudhishthira іs one оf them. Praise tо the Author for revealing this wisdom.

The author's masterful narration оf the Chausar game, which led tо the Pandavas' exile from Indraprastha, fascinated me. I also appreciated how the author depicted the Pandavas' journeys and struggles іn the forest and іn Virat, where they concealed their true identities until the dramatic reveal.

I highly recommend this book tо all history and historical fiction lovers. Get your copy today and you will surely love reading it.

Beautiful saga

Emperor Yudhishthira's misguided decision leads to a devastating loss of power and morality. Despite his downfall, he must find a way to regain his empire and uphold Dharma.

This Saga explores the theme of triumph for righteousness, similar to other well-known epics. Yudhishthira's journey is depicted very well, highlighting his inner struggles, and dilemmas.

The narration had my attention from the point the "Game of dice" began. We never understood what trauma Yudhishthir must be going through, especially at a point where he was losing everything one after the other. And when Draupadi is dragged by her hair in the Sabha, what happens next is history - a history that makes your heart wrench every time you hear this story.

"Draupadi Vastraharan" is the most sensitive and important aspect of Mahabharata. Hence its thoughtful narration was important.

Trials of Dharma is the second Book of the Samrat Yudhishthira set of three. The principal book of this series has seen Yudhishthira’s ascent to the magnificent lofty position, finishing with the greatness of Rajasuya. The ethical lord Yudhishthir, otherwise called Dharmaraj, goes through a definitive preliminary of his conviction and boldness. This Adventure investigates the subject of winning for exemplary nature, like other notable legends. Yudhishthira’s process is portrayed quite well, featuring his internal battles, and difficulties.

I’m not attached to Yudhishthira. I generally thought of him as a visually impaired supporter of the book of rules without legitimately understanding the circumstance and a player who bet his obligations in an arbitrary game and lost them all. The main portion of the book is miserable, following the occasions that happen during and following the dice game. We perceive how the siblings’ bond is tried and fortified through troublesome conditions, and how they support each other despite their blemishes. The most outstanding aspect of the book was the way that it was exceptionally sensible concerning a few occurrences.

The creator capably depicts Yudhishthira’s development, showing his demonstrations of salvage and security for his siblings and cousins in different testing circumstances. The start depicts how delicate a person he was, trailed by his decided nature and his goal and will to stroll in the ways of Dharma to recover everything. Enthusiasts of folklore, legendary stories, and character-driven stories will make this book a charming and improving read.

The Mahabharata is one of the most popular epics in ancient India. It is also one of the most complex ones because it travels through generations and has a huge number of characters. In this epic, the reader gets to read the journey of Dharma through the various characters and their sacrifices. The main part is the journey of the Pandavas (5 sons of King Pandu) and the Kauravas (100 sons of King Dhritarashtra and the elders of the Kuru dynasty). Gandeevadhari Arjuna is considered the hero of this epic, but he is not the hero of this book.

This book is about another prince of the Pandavas. It is about the elder son of the clan, who is considered the epitome of dharma.

This is book 2 of the series. In the first book, we get to read about the childhood and youth of the Kuru Princes. In this book, we read about their youth and their journey to understand dharma in a deep way (mainly by Price Yudhishthira). This is the journey of a gambler who turns into a savior.

I love reading tales of the Mahabharata because every time there is a new tale to enjoy, and like many others, I am not fond of Yudhishthira. I always considered him a blind follower of the book of rules without logically understanding the situation and a gambler who bet his responsibilities in a random game and lost them all. I used to consider him the reason for everybody's pain, but this book has changed my opinion. Through this book, I got to understand the human in him and the confusion he had in his life. I still believe he got trapped in that game, but now I understand his guilt and the burden he carried post-game and throughout the exile.

During the exile period, the Pandavas met and crossed paths with many people, but there are two characters mentioned in this book that are special to me. During their Ajnaatavasa, the Pandavas and Draupadi take shelter in the palace of the Matsya Dynasty. Over there, Princess Uttara asks for the robes of Kuru warriors and Prince Bhuminjaya. Both are very young for their age, but both had the strength and audacity to stand against the huge Kuru family. One respected Draupadi and was ready to fight for her; the other, despite being the youngest, understood the situation of the five brothers and supported it till they were ready to reveal. These two scenes and these two characters are special, and I loved the way the author scripted them.

The author's style of narration is simple but error-free and engaging. I just wish the author would write about the other wives of Samrat Yudhishthira; that's one thing I don't get to see or read anywhere. All in all, this book is scintillating till the very end. I am waiting to grab the third and last book of this trilogy.

Story of Pandavas’ and Draupadi’s struggle, powerfully shown.

•• INSIGHT: Trials of Dharma is the 2nd book of the Samrat Yudhishthira Trilogy in which the episode of dice game and exile is covered. The book is about how Yudhishthira loses everything in that game, how Draupadi gets disrobed and insulted by Kauravas and how the Pandavas and Draupadi serve their 13 years of exile.

•• REVIEW: I have read the first part of this trilogy too. Just like the previous one, the book does justice with the characters of Mahabharata. Being narrated from the point of view of Yudhishthira, this novel uniquely reflects the thoughts and mindsets of Pandavas and the challenges faced by them. The best part about the book was the fact that it was very realistic with respect to some incidents. The pace of the story was very apt. The book had those events too, which were never heard before. I was very impressed with the writing style of the author.

•• STRENGTH: 1. The writing style and fluency in the language.
2. The knowledge about the subject matter.
3. The cover page and title of the book were chosen thoughtfully.
4. The characterisations of Yudhishthira and Draupadi were very beautifully done and that showed in the book.
5. The book also has a glossary and bibliography for better understanding of the book.

•• WEAKNESS: 1. Except for some punctuation errors here and there, I did not find any weakness in the book.

•• TARGET READERS: This book is ideal for those people who are into mythology. Readers from any age group can read this book.

•• GENRE: Mythology

•• RATING: 4.2/5

I thank the author for the review copy of this amazing book!

This is the second book of the Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy.
The book starts with the famous dice game which is a major turning point in Mahabharata, continues with their life in the forest and ends with the end of their exile period.

The first half of the book is actually sad, following the events that take place during and immediately after the dice game. Yudhishthira keeps having an inner conflict, always blaming himself for whatever happened that day. He also tries going to the exile alone so as to not cause any more trouble but his brothers and wife end up accompanying him.

The second half of the book is amazing. The author highlights the growth of Yudhishthira. He recues and saves his brothers and cousins on different occasions. His inner conflict sees true answers when he answers the questions while saving his brothers.

Overall, it is a good book that shows the growth of his character. The way he handles dharma in difficult situations is noteworthy and this book is recommended to all Mahabharata fans.

"Trials of Dharma" by Semanti Chakraborty is the second book of the Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy.

In this book, Samrat Yudhishthira is the central character. In this part, THE GAMBLING, which took place in the Dyuta Sabha is majorly described. The dice game in Mahabharata was one of the climax points. Kauravas' uncle, Shakuni casts the magical dice throughout the game. The Kauravas were the cousins of the Pandavas who plotted against them. The Pandavas lost everything, beginning from the Indraprastha to the pride of their woman.

Following the Dice game, the author efficiently paints a picture of the abhorrent and shameful incidents that Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas faced in a room full of men. The harsh incidents that followed broke my heart and made me weep but the Pandavas' life took a turn that led to the great war of Mahabharat.

Among all the scenes described in the book, I felt every line and every scene where Draupadi was brought to the Sabha. She questioned the Adharma going on there to the elders present and her husband. "How easily you concluded it, Pitamaha!" Yudhishthira thought while Pitamaha concluded that he was incapable of helping her. My heart filled with misery as I read this.

This book contains a detailed description of Yudhishthira's change. The beginning describes how fragile a character he was, followed by his determined nature and his resolution and will to walk in the paths of Dharma to gain everything back.

The incidents of the sabha are clearly and efficiently described by the author, sending a chill across my spine. Her writing style is indeed commendable. Her knowledge of ancient mythological tales can be visualized by her storytelling and writing capabilities. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.

"Trials of Dharma," the second installment in Semanti Chakraborty's Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy, talks about the profound intricacies of the Mahabharata, unraveling the events that led to the epic war Mahabharata. Samrat Yudhishthir, renowned as Dharmraj Yudhishthir, is the central figure, his commitment to Dharma shaping the narrative.

I liked how the author narrated the intense gambling game(Chausar), which became the catalyst for the Pandavas' exile from Indraprastha. The author's vivid depiction of the Pandavas' life in disguise during their forest sojourn and in Virat is a standout feature along with the unveiling of their true identities in Virat.

Yudhishthir's unwavering commitment to righteousness is not merely a character trait but a guiding principle that threads through the story. The path of Dharma is indeed laden with challenges, mirrored in the tribulations faced by the Pandavas. Yet, amidst adversity, the underlying message is clear – perseverance on the righteous path yields rewards, culminating in good fortune.

Yudhishthir's character is replete with knowledge and wisdom, making it challenging to narrate his journey. However, the author has done justice to it by incorporating all the significant decisions made by Yudhishthir, showcasing the evident hard work and research invested. The attention to detail, especially in the portrayal of the gambling incident and the subsequent events in Virat, reflects the author's deep understanding of the source material.

In "Trials of Dharma," Semanti Chakraborty not only retells a timeless epic but adds the importance of following Dharma, making it a compelling read for those seeking a resonant exploration of duty, morality, and the enduring pursuit of righteousness.

"Trials of Dharma" is the second book of the Samrat Yudhishthira Trilogy written by the author Semanti Chakraborty that delves into the depths of the Mahabharata, focusing on the story of Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava brother. The book begins with the devastating fall of Yudhishthira in the game of dice🎲 in Hastinapura, a pivotal event that results in the loss of everything he had achieved.

Spanning the major portion of the book, the author delves into the Vana Parva🌲 of the Mahabharata, skillfully exploring the events that unfolded during the Pandavas' exile in the forest🌳. She brings the forest to life, painting a vivid picture of the trials and tribulations the Pandavas encounter. While the book primarily focuses on Yudhishthira's journey, Semanti Chakraborty also does justice to the other Pandava brothers.

The pacing at times feels sluggish, with the narrative struggling to maintain momentum, potentially leading to a sense of detachment for readers. Additionally, character development beyond Yudhishthira could be lacking, detracting from the depth and richness of the overall story.

In conclusion, "Trials of Dharma" fails to live up to its promises, offering little in terms of originality, coherent organization, or sophisticated analysis. Readers seeking an in-depth exploration of dharma and spirituality may find themselves disappointed by the book's lackluster execution and the author's reliance on personal beliefs rather than scholarly research.

Title: Trials of Dharma: Book 2 of Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy

Author: Semanti Chakraborty

Review:

Semanti Chakraborty's "Trials of Dharma" is the second book in the Samrat Yudhishthira Trilogy, a reimagining of the Mahabharata that delves into the complexities of Yudhishthira's character. The author, a former physics major turned passionate storyteller, successfully navigates the intersection of science and spiritual wisdom.

The narrative begins with Yudhishthira's rise to the imperial throne and the grandeur of Rajasuya, only to take a dramatic turn with the infamous game of dice in Hastinapura. Chakraborty skillfully explores the human side of Yudhishthira, depicting his flaws and vulnerabilities when faced with the pressures of the dice game. The author emphasizes Yudhishthira's acknowledgment of his mistakes and his subsequent journey to rediscover himself, setting the stage for a captivating story of loss, redemption, and self-discovery.

The book is divided into chapters that unfold key events, each contributing to the overarching narrative. The writing style is engaging, seamlessly blending elements of mythology, drama, and suspense. Chakraborty's attention to detail creates a vivid and immersive world, allowing readers to visualize the opulence of Indraprastha and feel the tension within the court of Hastinapura.

The characters are well-developed, with Yudhishthira's internal struggles taking center stage. The author presents a nuanced portrayal of Duryodhana, adding depth to his character beyond the typical antagonist role. The interactions between the characters, especially the exchanges between Yudhishthira and Duryodhana, are a highlight of the book.

One notable aspect is the incorporation of the author's scientific background into the narrative, offering a unique perspective on the traditional epic. This blend of science and spirituality adds a layer of depth to the storytelling, appealing to readers with diverse interests.

The book explores pivotal moments such as the game of dice, the exile, and the encounter with the Gandharvas, presenting them with a fresh perspective. The author successfully captures the emotional and psychological dimensions of these events, making them relatable to contemporary readers.

As the story progresses, Yudhishthira's resilience and commitment to Dharma become evident, paving the way for future challenges and conflicts. The author masterfully builds anticipation for the inevitable war, foreshadowing the complexities that lie ahead for the characters.

The scene that I most enjoyed in "Trials of Dharma" is from Chapter Thirty-Two, where Yudhishthira reacts to the events unfolding in the aftermath of the battle. This chapter is rich with emotional depth and pivotal moments, making it a compelling and memorable part of the book.

In conclusion, "Trials of Dharma" is a compelling addition to the Samrat Yudhishthira Trilogy, offering a thought-provoking reinterpretation of the Mahabharata. Semanti Chakraborty's storytelling prowess, combined with a unique blend of science and spirituality, creates a narrative that resonates with readers on multiple levels. Fans of mythology, epic tales, and character-driven stories will find this book a captivating and enriching read.

Author: Semanti Chakraborty

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 out of 5star

Semanti Chakraborty's "Trials of Dharma," the second book in the Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy, unfolds a captivating narrative that delves into the complexities of the Mahabharata's central character, Yudhishthira. Seamlessly blending passion for the epic with a profound understanding of human nature, Chakraborty offers readers a unique and thought-provoking perspective on the ancient tale.

In this installment, we witness Yudhishthira's fall from grace, the consequence of a fateful game of dice in Hastinapura. The author's meticulous attention to detail crafts a vivid world, immersing readers in the grandeur of Indraprastha and the tension-filled halls of the Hastinapura court. The characters are brought to life with authenticity, and the rich storytelling evokes a range of emotions, from suspense to introspection.

Chakraborty's portrayal of Yudhishthira's introspective journey is a standout element. The author addresses the criticism surrounding the infamous game of dice, depicting Yudhishthira not as a flawless hero but as a human with shortcomings and flaws. The narrative explores the internal conflicts of a patient and idealistic leader who succumbs to the pressures of the situation, leading to his downfall.

The chapters are intricately woven, each revealing a layer of Yudhishthira's character and the challenges he faces. The story doesn't just focus on his losses but also on his quest for self-discovery and redemption. The nuanced approach to character development sets this book apart, presenting Yudhishthira as a relatable and multidimensional protagonist.

The author's note provides valuable insight into the thematic foundations of the series, offering a glimpse into the philosophical underpinnings that guide Yudhishthira's journey. Chakraborty's commitment to reviving interest in the Mahabharata is evident, and her plans to explore underrated epic characters in future works add anticipation for what lies ahead.
The scene that I most enjoyed in "Trials of Dharma" is undoubtedly the intense and pivotal moment in Chapter Five, where Yudhishthira faces the disastrous outcome of the dice game. This chapter is a masterful blend of suspense, emotional turmoil, and strategic thinking, showcasing Semanti Chakraborty's skill in weaving a gripping narrative.

"Trials of Dharma" is a compelling continuation of the Yudhishthira trilogy, showcasing Semanti Chakraborty's prowess in blending mythology, philosophy, and storytelling. It is a must-read for those seeking a fresh perspective on the timeless epic and a nuanced exploration of the human experience.

Back to the era of Mahabharata! Back to the mind of Yudhishtira. Book 2 of the Yudhishtira Trilogy picks up right after the Sishupala Vadha. Similar to the first book, the story is written in the point of view of Yudhishtira. In the era of Ajaya, Asura and Aryavarta Chronicles, it's refreshing to read a book about a character who is not demonised for a moment of folly.
It's eyeopening to see that Yudhishtira is a character who has struggled immensely, much like his brothers and wife but here's the thing: despite tragedy upon tragedy hitting him and colossaly damaging most of his happy memories of life, he goes on. Pain does not numb him nor stop him from walking towards his destiny on the path of Dharma. Perhaps this is also a reason why he is called "Dharmaraj Yudhishtir."
I loved how he took time to mend his relationship with Draupadi. He makes no excuses and does his best to show his remorse. It wasnt okay all of a sudden. I also commend Draupadi's patience in the book. She is fiery but does not lose the gentle streak that she has in herself. She is not a whiny pushover. Instead, the author highlights her importance in the story and how she keeps the brothers together.
Character building wise, Yudhishtira has grown stronger and wiser. The memory of his mistakes blisters him in shame, but he is not the hero who sits and mopes in misery. He finds strength to go on, despite the ordeals he faces. It is evident that the author has done deep and immense research while writing the book and I appreciate that she has stuck to the original narrative. The narrative of the Vana Parva is delightful. When I was reading it, I felt I was right there, in the heart of the forest, sharing their sorrows and indulgence in wisdom.
Yudhishtira's inner coflict is something that we can relate to. As humans, we pivot and swerve back and forth with our perspectives and feelings and the way it is described in the book is totally relatable. Finally, who can read Mahabharata without coming across Krishna? It is obvious that the enigmatic Yadava approves of Yudhishtira and his ideals and dreams for Bharata. The stark difference between Duryodhana and Yudhishtira is the fact that the former views the world, centred around his ego. His pesimistic view is his most unfortunate quality. Yudhishtira on the other hand, focuses his concentration on others around him.
At the end of the book, we sincerely learn to understand the hardships that the eldest Pandava faced. Sometimes we walk on such turbulent paths too and in those moments, I hope we remember Yudhishtira's brave way of facing life's uncertainties.

The book titled "Trials of Dharma" - the second installment in Semanti Chakraborty's Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy, unfolds a riveting tale of an exiled emperor's journey through adversity, guilt, and redemption. Chakraborty, a masterful storyteller, weaves together elements of the Mahabharata with a fresh perspective, offering readers a captivating narrative that delves deep into the human struggle for righteousness.

The story kicks off with Emperor Yudhishthira making a fateful decision, driven by fear of revolt within his empire. This choice proves catastrophic, leading to his exile and the loss of everything he held dear. The once idealistic king of Dharma is stripped of his imperial power and moral high ground, setting the stage for a profound transformation.

Chakraborty's portrayal of Yudhishthira's inner turmoil is poignant and compelling. The emperor, drowning in guilt, faces the harsh realities of forest life, presenting readers with a nuanced exploration of his character. The author deftly navigates the psychological landscape of Yudhishthira, making him a relatable and empathetic protagonist despite his flaws.

The narrative is skillfully crafted, maintaining a perfect balance between the overarching themes of duty, morality, and the personal journey of self-discovery. As Yudhishthira grapples with the odds stacked against him, the plot unfolds with a series of challenges that test his resilience and determination. The pacing is well-tuned, keeping the reader engaged with each twist and turn in the emperor's quest for redemption.

One of my favourite scenes from the book is in chapter twenty-one wherein Samrat Yudhishthira is guessing as to what might have transpired between his brothers and Gandharvas. But this guessing game ends when Arjuna introduces Chitrasena, the Gandharva chief to him at this critical juncture in the book’s timeline.

Chakraborty's background in Physics and her profound understanding of the Mahabharata adds a unique flavour to her writing, blending scientific precision with the spiritual wisdom embedded in the Mahabharata. This amalgamation enriches the narrative, offering readers a fresh and unique perspective on the timeless epic.

In conclusion, "Trials of Dharma" is a must-read for those who seek a captivating saga of redemption, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of righteousness. Semanti Chakraborty's masterful storytelling and her unique perspective on the Mahabharata make this book a compelling addition to the realm of epic literature.

The Mahabharata is one of the greatest epics in Hindu mythology and each chapter is a treasure trove of life lessons. The lessons are relevant even during the present time, offering us solutions to many of our life problems. Trials of Dharma is the second Book of the Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy. The first book of this series has seen Yudhishthira's rise to the imperial throne, ending with the grandeur of Rajasuya. This second one begins with his fall, - with the infamous game of dice in Hastinapura that made Yudhishthira lose everything he had achieved. The book explores Yudhishthira's journey full of struggles from despair of losing it all to enlightenment and understanding the true meaning of Dharma.

The book starts in the immediate aftermath of Yudhishthira’s Rajasuya yagna. Obsessed with jealousy and vengeance, Duryodhana, the Kuru prince, and Yudhishthira’s cousin organize a game of dice, Yudhishthira’s only weakness. Using a rigged game, Duryodhana wins everything from Yudhishitra and later banishes him and his brothers, Pandavas to 12 years of exile in the forest and the 13th year in disguise. In a way, Yudhishthira’s temptation brought about that unexpected consequence for the Pandavas.

The book narrates the many encounters during the meeting, from meeting Ghatotkach and Iravan to facing Yaksha and his puzzles and living under a disguise in the Kingdom of Matsya. Through the years in exile, Yudhisthira gets a chance to reflect on his actions and regain the lost trust through his penance, capturing his inner struggles and guilt. The penance teaches him the real meaning of Dharma and the triumph of inner good over evil.

The book is a retelling of the Mahabharata through the perspective of Yudhishthir which is unique. Yudhishitra is probably the most misunderstood character of the epic and the book can convey his viewpoint and sorrow.

My favorite part of the book is Yaksha Prashna when Yudhisthira has to answer questions on Dharma to Yaksha to save his brother's life. Yudhisthira's calmness and objectivity in the face of adversity display Yudhishthir's immense knowledge of Dharma and righteousness. This is the one scene that defines Yudhisthira's character and his immense faith in Dharma, not abandoning his Dharma even during his greatest adversity.

Overall, "Trials of Dharma," is an immensely readable retelling of a timeless epic underlining the importance of duty, righteousness, and morality. A great read for everyone.

**Trails of Dharma: Book 2** by Semanti Chakraboty follows the story from the perspective of Yudhishthira, the eldest son of the Pandava clan. The book begins with Yudhishthira's rise to the imperial throne of Indraprastha. To demonstrate his prestige, he performs the famous Rajasuya ritual, a significant ceremony in the Vedic tradition. However, the event is marred by the death of Shishupala at the hands of Lord Krishna, making the coronation inauspicious.

Despite this, Yudhishthira embraces his role as king with dedication, supported by his wife, Queen Draupadi, and his brothers—Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, and Sahadeva. The kingdom flourishes under their rule, but their downfall looms when Yudhishthira is challenged to a game of dice by his malevolent cousin, Duryodhana, and cunning uncle, Shakuni. Aware of Yudhishthira's weakness for gambling, they exploit it, leading to a turning point in the Pandavas' lives. Yudhishthira loses his entire kingdom, himself, and even wagers his wife Draupadi, who is subsequently humiliated in the court of Hastinapur. This event sets the stage for the epic Mahabharata.

One of the most powerful and thought-provoking scenes is Draupadi's harassment in the court of Hastinapur. The men present, including her husbands, especially Yudhishthira, make no attempt to save her. This scene resonates deeply with contemporary society, where women often have to prove and protect themselves while men, who claim to be protectors, fail to act. This reflection on societal norms and the continued struggle for women's safety and respect adds a poignant layer to the narrative.

The book continues with the Pandavas' life in exile for 12 years, depicting their trials and resilience. Particularly compelling is the strength and determination shown by Draupadi throughout their journey. The narrative highlights the unity and courage of the Pandava clan as they prepare for the eventual war of the Mahabharata.

"Trails of Dharma: Book 2" is a compelling read, especially when seen through Yudhishthira's perspective, capturing his emotional journey and the steadfastness of his wife and family during their exile.

Yudishtir is often judged harshly because he is not perceived as a flawed mortal but the incarnation of Dharmaraja. I have my issues with Yudishtir and I was mainly looking if this book can change my mind.
Semanti successfully humanizes Yudishtir, shows that he is human too, given to mistakes. One of the most heartwarming aspects of Semanti's story -telling is that she does not try to dissociate her hero from emotions. Yudishtir fails his family at a crucial time and he KNOWS it, admits it and regrets it all through the book. This makes me empathize with him more than I usually do. Full marks to the author there :)
Semanti also highlights Yudishtir as a warrior where she gets a chance, which is another pleasant addition usually overlooked when it comes to this Pandav brother.
I also liked the importance and value given to Draupadi and her significant role in all Pandav achievements and decisions. It was very nice to see the emperor being portrayed as someone who respects his wife's opinions- a subtle message there about how women were viewed in ancient times. Very welcome.
Yudishtir's dynamic with Krishna is another appealing aspect brought out sufficiently by Semanti where needed.
The brief glimpses of Yudishtira, the brother, were good thho. But I did feel Nakul- Sahadev could have been fleshed out more. Lion's share of the attention went to the Kuntiputras and that felt a bit skewed.
Apart from this, I did miss a few things:
Yudishtira's dynamic with Kunti and her influence on his thoughts and life. I might be missing this bcos I haven't read Book 1 of the trilogy.
Some incidents I would hv liked to see explained were missing- Yudisthira sending a messenger to Draupadi before vastraharan and asking her to come, Subhadra marriage was a noticeable missing chunk esp since that alliance cemented Krishna- pandava bond for life, a few others.

Overall, thought an enjoyable read and a very grounded narrative of a character who is often not delved into in such detail. Kudos to the author for choosing a difficult protagonist to convince readers of and for sticking to it through a trilogy.

🍀 Trials of Dharma
🍀 Author - Semanti Chakraborty

🍀 Plot - This is the second book of Samrat Yudhisthira Trilogy. The first book was about the childhood day of Kauravas and Pandavas, their marriages and finally the Pandavas organising Rajshuya Yagya and the death of Shishupal.
In the second part “ The Trials of Dharma” the story moves ahead including various episodes like, Yudhisthira loosing everything along with Indraprastha to Kauravas in the game of dice which in turn brought disgrace to Draupadi. The Pandavas could not tolerate this humiliation and swore to revenge Kauravas.
Pandavas had to leave everything and move to exile for 13 years which included 1 year of incognito.
Will Pandavas be able to successfully complete thirteen years of exile?
Will Dharamraj Yudhisthira be ever able to come out of the guilt?

🍀Review -
The great battle of Mahabharata fought between the cousin brothers Kauravas and Pandavas is not just a battle it’s the Dharma Yudh.
The author has wisely divided the whole story of Mahabharata into three books. The segregation is perfect and easy to comprehend for the reader. This book describes the frustration and humiliation of Yudhisthira for being merely a puppet in the game of dice and losing everything. It’s always said that it was all the fault of Yudhisthira but here the author has highlighted the various aspects and situations justifying the actions of Yudhisthira by giving a deep insight into it.
In this context there is a conversation in chapter 7 where Yudhisthira says that a piece of land can be won with battle but not the trust of subjects which he has let down.
These lines make you understand why Yudhisthira is known as Dharamraj
Yudhisthira.
While reading the book you realise that the author has researched a lot about this epic, it’s not just a story instead it’s a story with well-quoted facts.
Simple language and the glossary of the Sanskrit words makes it an easy and perfect read.
Must read for people who are keen on knowing about the Indian mythology.
Mahabharata is a huge epic and it’s elating to see that the authors are bringing it to the Indian audience.

This gripping and provocative Mahabharata retelling, narrated from the viewpoint of the eldest Pandava, Yudhishthira, delves into the subtleties of his idealistic and stoic personality. When we read or hear the Mahabharata stories, Yudhisthira's personality frequently comes out as the most complicated to understand because people find it difficult to reconcile his idealism, tranquility, and constancy with logic. Author Semanti Chakraborty attempts to address many of these queries and conjectures regarding Yudhishthira in Part 2 of her trilogy.

This book covers the most well-known and widely interpreted part of the Mahabharata narrative, in which the idealistic Dharmaraja Yudhishthira shocked everyone by gambling away his empire, wife, and brothers. This sets in motion a series of events that profoundly alter not only his own life but also the history of the country as a whole, a turning point that remains poignant today.

There is a lot of depth in the depiction of Yudhishthira. He is unquestionably a wise and principled leader, but we can also see his dilemmas when faced with political conspiracies.

In my opinion, the novel's strongest aspect is its emphasis on Indian philosophy. One of my favorite scenes wherein this theme is subtly explored by the author is when Yudhishthira during his exile, meets with a challenge to answer some profound questions asked by a magical being, Yaksha, to save the lives of his brothers who were at the moment lying dead due to the spell of a Yaksha. Yudhishtra was asked to answer certain questions that resonated with his own life and the choices he had made until the present moment.

Here, the various riddles of a Yaksha about morality, virtues, and ethics, and Yudhishthira's answers demonstrate how Yudhishthira's dedication to Dharma has been both his greatest asset and his most tragic shortcoming.

Trials of Dharma is an engaging and skillfully written book that will fascinate readers with an interest in Indian philosophy, mythology, and history. It's a tale of redemption, tenacity, and the strength of faith. The author has done a masterful and sensitive job of encapsulating these ideas.

Trials of Dharma: Book 2 of Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy by Semanti Chakraborty

This is the second installment of the series. Unfortunately for me, I hadn't read the first part however it doesn't matter as I knew the events that took place up to the infamous game of dice in Mahabharat.

This book focuses on Yudhishthir and his psyche. My perception of him was that he was the eldest of Pandav who never lied and always followed the path of Dharm. Overall in my mind, he was a one-dimensional character. However, this book showed different aspects of Yudhishthir.

Being an idealist it didn't seem logical for Yudhishthir to put his wife as bait in the game. The author has done a marvelous job of depicting his psyche, leading up to the events as well as after the event. Even in the self-doubt and during their exile from Indraprastha, Yudhishthir became the anchor for the Pandav. I liked his patience more than his desire to follow the path of Dharm.

This book had various instances where we get to see different aspects of the epic. The one instance that was imprinted in me was the scene after the game when Pandav was living in exile. They had to do their work which was uncommon for them. Yudhishthir tries to help Draupadi but she begins blaming him for their troubles. I had always wondered how Draupadi dealt with immediate aftereffects.

Another scene I liked the best was where Yudhishthir helps Naga Nahush to escape from the land of Yaksha. Yudhishthir seemed confident about himself and his position even though Bhim was lying unconscious. Yudhishthir didn't lose his intellect and diffused the situation without having to raise his arms.

The concept of the book was unique. We often get the perspective of Arjun, Karn, and Draupadi. So hearing a story from Yudhishthir gave a new approach to the old tale.

The language of the book was fluid. Internal monologues didn't feel redundant or boring. The only thing I didn't like is the use of anglicized names like Chitrasen was referred to as Chitrasena.

Overall, the book was well written and the plot was properly executed. Looking forward to reading the last installment as well.

"Trials of Dharma" by Semanti Chakraborty is the second book in the Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy, where Samrat Yudhishthira takes center stage. The story primarily revolves around the infamous gambling event, the Dyuta Sabha, from the Mahabharata. This event, involving a dice game, stands out as a pivotal moment in the tale. Shakuni, the uncle of the Kauravas, manipulates magical dice, leading to the Pandavas' tragic loss against their cousins.

The aftermath of this game is distressing, particularly in depicting the abhorrent treatment of Draupadi, the Pandavas' wife, among a gathering of men. These incidents were deeply saddening and ultimately set the stage for the colossal Mahabharata war.

The moments where Draupadi confronted the elders in the Sabha resonated profoundly. Her questioning of the ongoing injustice while Yudhishthira felt powerless to help her was a heart-wrenching portrayal.

The book meticulously portrays Yudhishthira's evolution. It starts by highlighting his fragility as a character, leading to his transformation into a determined individual committed to upholding Dharma and reclaiming what was lost.

The author's vivid description of the Sabha incidents sent shivers down my spine. Her commendable writing style and deep understanding of ancient myths are evident in her storytelling, making the book an enjoyable and engaging read.

The scene from "Trials of Dharma" by Semanti Chakraborty encapsulates the intense emotional turmoil faced by the characters, especially during the pivotal gambling event, the Dyuta Sabha. It vividly portrays the manipulation, the distressing treatment of Draupadi, and the helplessness felt by Yudhishthira. The book meticulously traces Yudhishthira's evolution from vulnerability to a resolute commitment to righteousness, beautifully blending vivid descriptions and a deep grasp of ancient myths to create an engaging narrative that resonates with readers.

We will get to know about his struggles, insecurities, strategies, and his way of dealing with everything. Read this book to find out about the mesmerizing story written by the author.

The conversation that we witness between Krishna and Yudhishthira in the last scene makes you feel that all the sacrifices were worth it in the end. The lines spoken by Yudhishthira show how greatly his behavior and actions have changed and also how he makes his decisions. This transformation was a great change and teaches us, readers, that lessons always bring out the best in people.

This book captivated me from the start, drawing me into well portrayed Yudhishthira's character in this second installment of the Samrat Yudhishthira Trilogy, a mesmerizing reimagining of the Mahabharata. The author carefully weaves science and spiritual wisdom, creating a narrative that transcends traditional boundaries.

From Yudhishthira's grand rise to the throne to the gripping game of dice in Hastinapura, Chakraborty skillfully unveils the human side of our protagonist. The book beautifully explores his flaws, vulnerabilities, and the profound journey of self-discovery that follows. Each chapter unfolds key events with engaging writing, effortlessly blending mythology, drama, and suspense.

The author's attention to detail vividly brings Indraprastha to life, and her nuanced portrayal of characters, especially Duryodhana, adds depth to the narrative. What stood out was the incorporation of her scientific background, offering a fresh perspective to the epic.

I must say that this is a thought-provoking addition to the trilogy, presenting pivotal moments with contemporary relatability. I loved this book and it was totally worth my time. Surely gonna recommend my friends too.

Misunderstood hero.

Heroism does not only mean perfect looks, great skills etc. It is the ability to see ones own flaws, owning them and going beyond them. Yes, Yudhishthira is that hero. Congratulations to the Author for bringing this out.

Mahabharata from Yudhisthira’s PoV

My rating: 4.2/5

Narrated from the point of view of Yudhishthira, this novel uniquely reflects the thoughts and mindsets of Pandavas and the challenges faced by them. The turmoil that Yudhishthira must’ve gone through during the dice game has rarely been spoken or written about, and this book deals with that bit, quite sensitively.
