story of extremes

One of the meanest Darcy characters. One of the stupidest Darcy characters. One of the most self-absorbed Darcy characters. A HEA that can only have happened because Darcy got Lizzie pregnant.

Writing style was similar to my paragraph I started this review with.

If you could seperate the writing from the story this would be a great story but not written as well as it could be.
This author needs a good editor or proof reader to tighten up the prose.
It just get frustrating to read especially toward the end, it is such a shame because she has orginal ideas which are worth reading, I just don't like feeling like throwing my kindle across the room.

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: Mature: assault attempt, sexual frustrations, subdued sex scenes, mild language
>>Angst Level: nail-biter: grief-driven angst that will have you pulling your hair. Arrange for emotional support [therapy or medicinal aides]. Have oxygen on hand and breathe, just breathe. I suggest a pillow to punch or pummel to work off the frustrations [not feather: you’ll understand if you do]. A soundproof room in which to scream frustrations is preferable. Screaming in the middle of the night, or at any time is not advisable. The SWAT Team leaves a holy mess when they are called to investigate—just saying.
>>Source: Borrowed from KU [4-1-24]: I volunteered to leave a review. 26 Chapters + Epilogue: Note there were errors consistent with a script being translated from Spanish to English. The wording and missing words often create strange sentences or thoughts. I first read this as a WIP on the forums.
>>Trope: [1] Bennet dies [2] Compromise [unintentional or not] [3] The Haughty, Disdainful, Proud, Arrogant, Superior, Darcy. He was not the worst I have read; however, he was bad enough. [4] New pairing for Jane. I liked him.

Facts: Darcy was in love with Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Darcy wanted her. Darcy did not like who she was, where she came from, or her people. He could not get past his prejudice for her station in life, lack of connections to anyone he thought worthy, no fortune, and her relatives were in trade. Even though she was the daughter of a gentleman, she was decidedly beneath him. Yeah, that Darcy.

The compromise happened at the Hunsford Parsonage and rumors began to spread [With a Little Help from My Friends: Shout out to the Beatles 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: I couldn’t help referencing it]. Darcy and Elizabeth would have to marry. She didn’t want to marry him but knew that according to societal norms, she and her family would be ruined. She had to protect her sisters. And so, they did. Our dear boy promised to support her family… in a house not near them. He would let his solicitor handle the details as he didn’t want to work with Gardiner. [Sniff: while brushing dirt off cuffs] GRRR!

Life as Mrs. Darcy: Elizabeth could not bear hearing Darcy discuss her family in his disdainful way. So, they made a pact to not discuss her family… ever. He was thrilled she understood that she was now in a higher social circle and needed to distance herself from her roots. Seriously!?! Breathe… just breathe.

Darcy thought nothing of asking Mrs. Darcy to not associate with her family at his…erm… their house in London or at Pemberley. She was allowed to go to them, only, if and when it was convenient to him and his schedule. Seriously?!? At least, he allowed mail from her family. Yet, he was jealous when she wanted to read them in private. Have I said I don’t like this guy?

Pemberley: When her aunt and uncle were visiting Lambton, Elizabeth went to them at the Inn because she could not invite them to Pemberley. After all, Mr. Gardiner was a tradesman, you see. And yet, Bingley and his sisters were housed in the guest wing at Pemberley. Talk about a double standard. That was one of many that just made my teeth hurt. Elizabeth did not want the Pemberley coach seen at the Inn. It would cause questions as to why her relatives were not invited to Pemberley. Elizabeth walked to Lambton and back so no one would know. Remember, Lambton was five miles from Pemberley.

This is the kind of story where you want an iron skillet nearby to cosh someone. However, as angry as I was at him, I also had to look at Elizabeth’s behavior. She felt there were two sides to her new husband. On one side, she hated and despised his attitude. On the flip side of that coin, was a man she fell in love with. The feminists of today cannot understand how things were back then. Women had no power and were at the mercy [if they were lucky] of their husbands. Chattel or property is another word that is thrown about when describing that era. A husband could do what he chose… short of killing his wife. Yeah! Happy times.

While Lizzy is visiting Hunsford, Mr. Bennet sustains life-threatening injuries from being thrown from his horse. Just after Lizzy reads a letter from home informing her of the accident, Mr. Darcy arrives with his bumbling proposal. She hands him the letter in response. He quickly takes control, assuming that she has accepted the proposal. He takes her home in his carriage with no chaperone, so she is now compromised. Her father dies shortly after they marry.

This is one of the most arrogant Darcy variations I have read, and I don't know how Lizzy falls in love with him. He agrees to support her family financially, but they are not allowed in any of his homes. Lizzy may visit if the visit is convenient to Darcy, but she cannot tell him anything about the family. Not when her sisters marry, not when her mother suffers a stroke.

There are a few original characters who are interesting but perhaps too perfect. They marry into the family and serve to show how wrong Darcy is.

I don't like the possessive, jealous, overbearing Darcy. He wants to be with Lizzy all the time, insisting on holding her as they sleep. At one point, she tells him she is cold and wants to get her nightgown and he won't even let her up because he is there to keep her warm. He gets mad when she would rather read her letters (from relatives he won't allow to visit) in privacy and is even jealous of her pet dog. This level of control is not romantic: it is a giant red flag. I'm willing to accept historical views on gender roles when reading historical fiction, but I don't enjoy romanticizing abusive behavior.

Lizzy leaves Pemberly and goes to her brother in law in London, and asks Darcy to use his money and influence to obtain an annulment. I would have preferred it if that unlikely event had happened instead of the HEA.

The author consistently misuses pronouns, making it hard to understand which character she is referring to at some point. I noticed this in some of her other books as well, and hope she finds an editor to help clear up these errors for future books.

good storyline

However I’m not a fan of the writing style. It’s more of a summary. This character did _____ because of ______. I do not believe I will reread the book but I did enjoy the premise of them marrying and Darcy is oblivious of how his behavior is hurting his relationship. Also I feel we miss elizabeth actually falling in love with Darcy. After they separate she comes up with little details that she found out about her husband that made her heart soften to him. I would have liked to witness those discoveries. And during the time Darcy is evolving he realizes some of the gifts Elizabeth receives in the mail were handkerchiefs that Mrs Bennet made for him and he just happens to carry it around with him despite Elizabeth never giving them to him. Small little scenes like this take me out of the story trying to remember if I missed something.

Couldn't believe this Darcy

The book itself was good. What I had trouble with was how utterly ridiculous this Darcy was. I have read many P&P variations and while I know he was written this way, he was horrible, almost worse than Caroline Bingley and that is saying a lot. Lizzy was amazing as always and dealt with so much. If you can past how horrible Darcy is, you will enjoy the rest of the wonderful new characters.

Not the Compromise I expected

It was better and this variation while gad some grammar errors still held me captive.
Mrs. Bennet is not transformed but illness kept her from histrionic behavior. All the Be net women are transformed.
This is a story that begins with selfishness and sacrifice —and transforms to trust, sacrifice, and devotion.
I highly recommend this variation for ages over 16 years.

Awesome story with lots trials for Darcy and Elizabeth.

Awesome story with lots of trials for Darcy and Elizabeth. There is quite a learning curve for Darcy to come to the right way of thinking and treating others. I enjoyed this story on the fan fiction site and I was quite happy to reread it when it was published. I real!y enjoy all this authors stories.

Worth reading the

I'm not a great fan of Ms. Flan's writing style. But her story was interesting and somewhat different then expected. I definitely did not care for Darcys character, and Elizabeth was nothing like we expect her to be she is very submissive and complacent. But the story keeps ones attention.

Enjoyable Story!

This story flowed quickly for me. I couldn't put it down. What I liked about it was how it didn't dwell on subjects and repeat itself on certain things. What I disliked was its severity on editing needed. I'd recommend this story to all Pride and Prejudice enthusiast every where. I'd reread this story again in the future.

Amazing plot

This plot was intricate and enjoyable. I only wish the coherence had been as well planned. I think that it lacked an experienced editor who could have addressed that issue as well as the numerous grammatical problems. I would love to read it again after a rewrite.

Endearing and heatbreaking

Endearing and heatbreaking.
I did like this story, but so sad at times. Grateful Darcy learned his lesson and that Elizabeth's family dis so well. And the bad guys get their comeuppance.
Point deducted for grammatical errors.
