wonderful, elegant, accessible writing about the culture and lore of the Yekuana people of the northern Amazon. i feel that i truly got to know the society on multiple levels. guss focuses primarily on basket-making, but also includes elements of house- and garden-building as pathways into the organization and storytelling of the Yekuana. if i have any complaint, it's that i had no sense of what it might be like to be an individual within this community, although that might be asking too much of a work such as this.
