Rock Skully was the Dead's manager from 1965 to 1985, and David Dalton was a founding editor of Rolling Stone magazine.
Rock gives us an inside look at the Dead's early years, when it was all peace and love, Human Be-In from 1967, The Pranksters, and where the lyrics come from. Rock also gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the band's partying, how they would sneak young girls into their hotels, their diehard fans, and what kind of drugs they partook in. Once Jerry started to use "China White," it was pretty much over.
"We now return our souls to the creator and as we stand on the edge of eternal darkness, let our chant fill the void, that others may know: In the land of the night, the Ship of the Sun is drawn by the Grateful Dead..." - Egyptian Book of the Dead
A masterpiece. I have no affection for the music of the Grateful Dead. This inside story - wonderfully written and hilarious - is a “can’t put down” read.
