In the isolated city of Lexum, following your heart's desire against the will of the collective could be deadly. But for seventeen-year-old Breel Sorep, the urge to express herself is just too tempting. With her passion for drawing on the list of banned activities, Breel is devastated when she receives her final warning. Art offers an escape from the harsh realities of her life, but to be caught once more would have dire consequences for the rebellious teen. If only Uncle Famut's stories of the fictional world of Intercludae were real. Then Breel could be free to express her creativity instead of being trapped in the field of computer programming—a career chosen for her as a small child. Starting in a new role, Breel encounters Cafrec, a co-worker with striking sparkling blue eyes, who's unlike anyone the young woman has ever met. Together, the pair begin to decipher a series of clues which seem to reveal that Intercludae may not be so fictional after all. Using her programming skills and cunning, Breel must decide how far she's willing to go to have the freedom she so desperately wants. But as Breel and Cafrec try to escape the forces of oppression, can Breel leave everything she knows and risk her own life for the faint hope of finally finding freedom?

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a book that has 2 parts - I really liked the part that described the cult of the personality in this in the future dictatorship. This dictator rules any form of artistic pursuit ruthlessly. Anyone (even children) who strays out of the parameters of what is allowed is put to death in a public forum that all must attend and chant and cheer. It is part of the indoctrination of the leader and to also create a society that does exactly what the leader wants. What I liked about it is how it describes how people do revolting things without realizing it and it is a self-preservation impulse. This is extremely well described and it is quite disturbing.

The second part of the story is really the main thread - Breel is brought up in this society but has always liked to draw (a forbidden act) she is also a gifted scholar at school - this story follows her graduation and work placement where she meets a young man who like her has kept his individuality hidden (though both Breel and Cafrec have had warnings by the dictator's police). I enjoyed the story and how the young pair flee this dictatorship but find out that the protesters also have their secrets…. I found this part of the story whilst an enjoyable read some of it was in my mind a bit clunky in the story line. I think that this may be better fleshed out in the next book. So overall a good read.

Welcome to Lexum, a dystopian society operating under the iron fist of president Tatum, a ruthless and oppressive leader who demands compliance–or else. Here, within the stifling walls of a regime that decides and dictates the careers and behaviors of its residents based to the needs of the collective, we meet Breel, a young dreamer who’s stuck programming computers instead of pursuing her artistic passions; and Cafric, an intoxicating young colleague who shares Breel’s secret longing to aspire. Together, the pair take us on a thrilling quest toward freedom–and the many secrets they uncover along the way.

I SO enjoyed this story. This was an exceptionally engaging debut and I loved the creative structure and world building of Lexum and beyond. As far as dystopian YAs go, this book has it all: high stakes, big emotions, a powerful villain, dynamic characters, steamy friendships–all of which kept me turning pages; and now that I’ve finished book one, I’m on the edge of my seat for numbers two and three! Felicia is definitely a talented new voice and I’m dying to read more!

Absolutely fantastic dystopian novel! It has all the important ingredients of a truly engaging dystopian adventure…a main character (female) who is struggling to conform within the constraints of society, rebels with plans to overthrow the oppressive government, a leader you love to hate and who makes your blood boil from the injustice he pushes upon society and of course a love interest.
I enjoyed this book from page one and devoured it quickly. It was unique in its own way and the rhythm and world building were top notch. My only complaint is that I now have to wait for book two!!!
Highly recommend to all lovers of the dystopian genre and really anyone who enjoys a well written book that brings you in and holds you there until the last page!

s following your heart so bad, well it is for Breel. One thing that Breel loves doing is drawing, but that is forbidden and Breel is on her final warning, but drawing is Breel's escape from everything that is happening in her own life. Breel meets Cafrec, someone else that has had to keep things hidden and knows how Breel feels. Both Breel and Cafrec have been warned by the dictator's police. I loved following the story of these two and what they have to go through. How would you feel if you are told you can't do something that you love and helps you cope with everyday life?

This was an interesting and enjoyable, yet brutal read that was well written, had a compelling and gritty storyline and well developed characters.

The dystopian world is built perfectly and is utterly terrifying, especially when anyone - even minors can be put to death in public execution, and on top of that everyone, including their loved ones, not only have to attend the execution they have to cheer and act like they agree with the decision too.

This is a thought provoking and disturbing read that I just couldn't put down

“you shall not engage in behaviour that places individual benefit over societal benefit”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

All my dystopian peeps, this book needs to go on your TBR immediately!! When I say I consumed this book, I mean it.

Ketcheson knows how to world build as the story is going on so we jump right in from the very first page. I really liked how Lexum was more of a communist dystopian rather than a capitalist as it was a refreshing viewpoint to see how everybody is “equal” yet injustices still occur.

Our FMC Breel is studying to be (and becomes) a computer programmer for Lexum, a career chosen for her by the Nito test when she was younger. Breel loves to draw but she gets her final warning from the government, if she’s found breaking the law again she will receive Mortae. There have been stories about Intercludae - a place where their leader is elected by the people and citizens can have hobbies as well as careers. Breel dreams she can go to Intercludae as all she wants to do is be an illustrator.

Every aspect of this book had me gripped and intrigued. I binge read the entire thing. Cafrec has my entire heart, he was such a sweetheart and helped Breel not be afraid of the thoughts she was having surrounding the way they live. My heart also broke for Breel and her family - the way they have conflicting views and some of them were so indoctrinated by President Tatum. There is action, romance, heartbreak, tension…I mean what more can I ask for!

Fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Maze Runner you will absolutely adore this, I truly felt like I had transported to little 2013 nemo enjoying these books again and I am not mad about it. However I need book 2 right this second 🥲

Thank you so much to @lovebookstours and Felicia Ketcheson for the gifted copy of this book💕
