This was a great little book that informed me more about the history and reality of Chicana/os. The author gives a brief history of the Chicana/o experience in the Occupied Territories of the Southwest and develops 9 shared themes and three symbols through interviews and analysis. The interviewees respond to questions on Machismo y La Mujer, Racism-classism, Education, Violence vs. Nonviolence, "Respect for the rights of others is peace" (Quote by Benita Juarez), The Land, Fatalistic and Anarchistic Tendencies, the Catholic Church, The*logy, the Symbol of Exodus, the Religious-spiritual symbol of Guadalupe, and the Secular-spiritual symbol of La Raza Cosmica. Ultimately, the author argues that Chicana/o people have been under oppression since the Mestizo people were formed. He and the interviewees agree that the system is stacked against people of La Raza. They believe that undoing the system and utilizing the political power of the Church is the only way to attain liberation for the oppressed Chicana/o people. Guerrero suggests using the symbols of Our Lady of Guadalupe and La Raza Cosmica as foundational organizing tools to motivate the Chicana/o people to struggle against the gringo system that oppresses them and to attain liberation.
