I picked up this book, unsure about it's motives. However, it soon showed me its true colors. (not orange and black, as the cover displays) It swung me into a complex world of knowledge about Shakespeare and one of the great adventures inside of it. Good job Jan Mark!
Wow what a brilliant book to introduce a teen or tween to Shakespeare. I wish this book had been around when I first encountered the bard! A charity shop discovery, it comes hot on the heels of my reading Hamnet and rereading Shakespeare: The World as a Stage and that meant some things were already familiar such as Shakespeare’s father being a glover. However Jan Mark really brings that trade to life and I loved the challenge that is presented to John Shakespeare by one Peter Starling and the little denouement that is set up for this individual and his sidekick at the end.
Knowing at least some of Shakespeare’s canon well now I was able to appreciate many of Jan Mark’s references neatly woven into the story but can see how good it would be to newly discovered these as a youngster going on to study say The Dream or Hamlet.
A triumph deserving of The Guardian’s comment “ A hugely enjoyable and dazzlingly clever novel” .
