When the darkness of her brother's diagnosis hits her family hard, Evie feels helpless and invisible. Her parents focus solely on his life-threatening illness, and all of Evie's dreams are abandoned in the fight for his life. As an eighth grader, this year was supposed to be epic, top of the school ladder, only to find herself suddenly pushed off into a maelstrom of fear and uncertainty.
Who can she turn to when the shadows attack?
The shadow demons fill her bedroom, their dark silhouettes hover above her bed. She's trapped in their trance, unable to move or make a sound as they sneak closer and closer. Evil seems to emanate from them, and she can almost feel it trying to break inside her head and drive her mad with fear.
A sense of impending danger looms over Evie as her reality seems to unravel. Unless she confronts the dark shadows and finds a way to banish them from her life and her family, the creatures might overtake everyone she loves.
Shadows was PERFECT. I would like to start off by saying that I am so amazed at the progress JL Burrows has made as an author. I had the privilege to read the first edition of Shadows and be a part of the process of it growing from a novella to the first full novel in this series. It has been absolutely amazing to have been able to watch JL Burrows develop her authors voice and to watch this series begin. This novel is a perfect beginning to this new series for young readers. The story unfolds through the perspective of Evie who faces darkness, in many different, mysterious ways, in this time of her life. As the story progresses, we see the darkness she faces develops into something supranatural. Something that Evie must learn to fight. The story that begins in this novel is a perfect introduction to the series as it leaves the reader wondering what the “shadows” really are. The ending will leave you with a strong connection to Evie and waiting for the second novel. Evie is characterized so well in this novel as she is very relatable for young readers because of her middle school demeanor and even to older readers (like me) as we reflect back on our past. In addition, she sets an example as a strong model for those who are going through or have gone through struggles like her as her character develops throughout the story. Evie and the message behind her character is my favorite thing about this story. I encourage families to refer this story to their kids and even for young adults to read and enjoy. I loved this book.
HB: I liked it. I liked how Evie really grew throughout the book as a person and a believer. The cliffhangers leave you breathless and wanting more.
EK: I liked how the story really emphasized how we need the power of God to fight off the darkness how we can't do it on our own. I like the tiny love story between Evie and James.
RK: I like the character development how she grew closer to God. How the parents weren't perfect they were realistic characters struggling with real things. I like the story line lots of plot twist and kept me wanting more.
Brooke: This story was fiction but real because so many people go through this or go through similar valleys. It was refreshing to read something that doesn't sugar coat the darkness and give real tools for defeating it through the strength of God. It's a really powerful series and I'm looking forward to the next book.
Wow! I think everyone should get this book! It is my favorite of hers. This story is the perfect demonstration of spiritual warfare in action. Also, it addresses a common problem that happens when a sibling has a major illness and the other sibling feels invisible. Seriously, go get this book!
