Not only is the Middle East an important region in terms of international security, but its oil is of vital importance to the free world economies. The continuing flow of its oil rests on fragile inter-state relations. The papers collected in this volume examine three critical Israeli security and the Palestinians, Saudi Arabian security and stability, and Soviet policy towards the Gulf. Two sub-questions are Syrian foreign policy, and a possible nuclear future for the region. This collection delves beneath the surface to provide the essential background to the daily shifts of power and politics.
