It Started with Dracula: The Count, My Mother, and Me

Rate this book
The terrifying legend of Count Dracula silently skulking through the Transylvania night may have terrified generations of filmgoers, but the tall, elegant vampire captivated and electrified a young Jane Congdon igniting a dream to one day see his mysterious land of ancient castles and misty hollows.

Four decades later she finally takes her long-awaited trip–never dreaming that it would unearth decades-buried memories of life with an alcoholic mother. Set in Dracula's back yard, the story unfolds in a mere eighteen days as the author follows the footsteps of Dracula from Bucharest, to the Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea. Dracula's legend becomes the prism through which she would lay claim to a happiness she had never known.

A memoir full of surprises, Jane's story is one of hope, love–and second chances.

I was a textbook editor for 30 years, and now I am the author of three memoirs. My latest book, How the WILD EFFECT Turned Me into a hiker at 69, was published in June 2018. Paperback, Ebook, and Audible versions are available from Amazon.

My first book was It Started with Dracula: The Count, My Mother, and Me (2011). It is a story that connects my childhood with an alcoholic mother and my trip to Transylvania as an adult.

I also co-authored my brother's memoir, Mr. Joe: Tales from a Haunted Life, by Joseph Barnett and Jane Congdon (September 2013).

I live in the Midwest. My blog is So Write! My website is due for an update, but you can catch the latest news on my Facebook page.

Jane Congdon is an adventurer and dreamer, able to bring her fantasy to life in this intriguing drama that unfolds like a travel guide. Juxtaposed with her childhood concerns over her mother’s drinking, the author’s trip to see Dracula’s castle (and be close to anything Christopher Lee ever touched) is her departure from life in the northeast. I recommend this unique book for its complexity and relatable traveling experiences.
